The Argument For The Deity Of Jesus Christ

By: Mark Tabata (Evangelist)

As New Testament Christians, our faith is dependent upon the identity of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the foundation of the church of Christ (Matthew 16:13-18; 1 Corinthians 3:11; Ephesians 2:20-22).

In this article, we are going to carefully examine and explicate the basic argument which shows that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

The Argument Stated

Let’s carefully notice the the argument that we will be studying:

If the New Testament Scriptures are genuine and credible, and if they teach that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, then Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

The New Testament Scriptures are genuine and credible, and they teach that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Therefore, Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Clearly Defining Our Terms

By “the New Testament Scriptures,” reference is made to the twenty-seven Books which have been inspired of God and have been handed down to the church from the time of their writing by the Apostles of Jesus and their companions, who were inspired by the Holy Spirit, as also the evidences which they provided clearly demonstrate and prove (John 14:26; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; Hebrews 2:1-4).

By “genuine,” I am referring to the fact that the New Testament Scriptures are indeed written by their traditionally accredited authors, the Apostles and Prophets of Christ, and their close companions. Hence, the Gospels and New Testament Epistles are not anonymous documents, nor are they from an era postdating the first century A.D.

By “credible,” we are discussing the fact that the New Testament Scriptures are true in their reporting, in that their writings are historically objective and authentic. Their authors are not guilty of lying or of false reporting; but these Books are instead trustworthy in the historical details which they set forth and narrate.

By “Son of God,” we are asserting that the New Testament Scriptures teach (through direct statement, approved example, and necessary inference) that Jesus of Nazareth is indeed, Deity, the Second Person of the Godhead, also known as the Son of God. Due to the confusion of the phrase “Son of God,” in our modern religious context, the following linguistic comments are quite helpful:

“Perhaps no name or title of Christ has been so misunderstood as the title Son of God.[ 22] Some have taken this term to mean that Christ came into existence at a point in time and that he is in some way inferior to the Father. Some believe that since Christ is the Son of God, he cannot possibly be God in the same sense as the Father. Such an understanding is based on a faulty conception of what “Son of…” meant among the ancients. Though the term can refer to “offspring of” in some contexts, it carries the more important meaning, “of the order of.”[ 23] The phrase is often used this way in the Old Testament. For example, “sons of the prophets” meant “of the order of prophets” (1 Kings 20: 35). “Sons of the singers” meant “of the order of singers” (Neh. 12: 28). Likewise, the phrase “Son of God” means “of the order of God,” and represents a claim to undiminished deity. Ancient Semitics and Orientals used the phrase “Son of…” to indicate likeness or sameness of nature and equality of being.[ 24] Hence, when Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, his Jewish contemporaries fully understood that he was making a claim to be God in an unqualified sense.” (Ron Rhodes, Christ Before The Manger: The Life And Times Of The Preincarnate Christ, 446-459 (Kindle Edition))

Having  defined our proposition, let us now turn our attention to a careful investigation of these matters.

Are The New Testament Scriptures Genuine?

Many in our modern day overly skeptical world have been taught that the New Testament Scriptures (especially the canonical Gospels) are anonymous forgeries, perhaps written by religious zealots in the second or third century A.D. (long after the time of Jesus Christ). It is further claimed that these Books are therefore unreliable in anything which they teach about Jesus, and that because of their alleged uncertain authorship, these Books cannot be trusted in the slightest.

However, the facts themselves demonstrate clearly that the New Testament Scriptures are not anonymous forgeries, but were written by their traditionally ascribed authors. Matthew and John were Apostles of Christ, while Mark was a close companion of the Apostle Peter and Luke a confidant of the Apostle Paul.

Let’s start by noticing what the Gospels themselves claim. Far from being anonymous, the Gospels clearly identify themselves as being the work of their respective authors!

“The first and perhaps biggest problem for the theory of the anonymous Gospels is this: no anonymous copies of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John have ever been found. They do not exist. …Instead, as New Testament scholar Simon Gathercole has demonstrated, the ancient manuscripts are unanimous in attributing these books to the apostles and their companions…When it comes to the titles of the Gospels, not only the earliest and best manuscripts, but all of the ancient manuscripts without exception, in every language— attribute the four Gospels to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John….Second, notice that there is some variation in the form of the titles (for example, some of the later manuscripts omit the word “Gospel”). However, as New Testament scholar Michael Bird notes, there is “absolute uniformity” in the authors to whom each of the books is attributed….In fact, it is precisely the familiar names of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John that are found in every single manuscript we possess!…Third— and this is important— notice also that the titles are present in the most ancient copies of each Gospel we possess, including the earliest fragments, known as papyri (from the papyrus leaves of which they were made). For example, the earliest Greek manuscript of the Gospel of Matthew contains the title “The Gospel according to Matthew” (Greek euangelion kata Matthaion ) (Papyrus 4). Likewise, the oldest Greek copy of the beginning of the Gospel of Mark starts with the title “The Gospel according to Mark” (Greek euangelion kata Markon )…In short, the earliest and best copies of the four Gospels are unanimously attributed to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. There is absolutely no manuscript evidence— and thus no actual historical evidence— to support the claim that “originally” the Gospels had no titles.” (Brant Pitre, The Case For The Real Jesus: The Biblical And Historical Evidence For Christ, 17-19 (Kindle Edition); New York, NY: Image, an imprint of the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House).

Another evidence of genuineness which is also worth noting comes from the early Christians: disciples of Christ who carefully studied the matters of Apostolic authorship very carefully. They continually affirmed the genuineness of the New Testament Scriptures from the earliest of times. For example, please consider the following quotations from some of the early Christians:

“It is not possible that the Gospels can be either more or fewer in number than they are. For, there are four zones of the world in which we live, and four principal winds. Now, the church is scattered throughout all the world, and the “pillar and ground” of the church is the Gospel. Therefore, it is fitting that she should have four pillars, breathing out immortality on every side, and renewing men afresh.” (Irenaeus (c. 180, E/ W), 1.428)

“I say, therefore, that in those [apostolic] churches, the Gospel of Luke that we are defending with all our might has stood its ground from its very first publication. And it has stood its ground not simply in those churches that were founded by apostles, but in all the churches that are united with them in the fellowship of the mystery of the gospel of Christ. . . . The same authority of the apostolic churches will afford defense of the other Gospels also, which we possess equally through their means, and according to their usage. I mean the Gospels of John and Matthew—while that which Mark published may be affirmed to be Peter’s, whose interpreter Mark was. For men usually ascribe Luke’s form of the Gospel to Paul.” (Tertullian (c. 207, W), 3.350.)

“Concerning the four Gospels which alone are uncontroverted in the church of God under heaven, I have learned by tradition that the Gospel according to Matthew (who was at one time a tax collector and afterwards an apostle of Jesus Christ) was written first. He composed it in the Hebrew tongue and published it for the converts from Judaism. The second one written was that according to Mark, who wrote it according to the instruction of Peter. For Peter, in his general epistles, acknowledged Mark as a son, saying, “The church that is in Babylon, elect together with you, salutes you. And so does Mark, my son.” And third, was the one according to Luke, which he composed for the converts from the Gentiles. This is the Gospel commended by Paul. Last of all, there is the one according to John.” (Origen (c. 245, E), 9.412.)

Commenting on some of the quotations from the early Christian writings, Kruger has observed:

“The question we have been asking in this chapter is a simple one. At what point did Christians consider their own books to be “Scripture”? Was this a late- second- century phenomenon largely due to the influence of Irenaeus, as some scholars suggest? The historical evidence surveyed here suggests a very different picture than the one that is typically presented. Not only do others in Irenaeus’s own time period already receive many of the New Testament books as Scripture (for example, Muratorian Fragment, Clement of Alexandria, Theophilus of Antioch), but this trend can be traced even further back into the second century. Justin Martyr appears to know the four canonical Gospels and indicates that they were used as Scripture in worship alongside the Old Testament during his day. In addition, Papias, Barnabas , Ignatius, Polycarp, 1 Clement , 2 Peter, and 1 Timothy also seem to regard a number of Christian writings as Scripture. They often refer to them expressly as “Scripture” (sometimes introducing them with “it is written”) or regard them as possessing apostolic authority— which, functionally, would be on par with the authority of Scripture. While the boundaries of the church’s Scriptures during this early time were still fairly fluid (and would not be resolved for centuries), there seems to be little doubt that the church did, in fact, have Scriptures…One should also not forget that the evidence above is not just from a single church father, but from a variety of sources spread over a number of different regions. While any individual piece of evidence might be contested or questioned, it is the extent of the evidence that proves to be the compelling factor. If we are correct that Christians began to view their books as Scripture much earlier than Irenaeus— perhaps even by the turn of the century— then this provides noteworthy confirmation of the arguments we have been making throughout this volume. We have argued that canon was not a late ecclesiastical development but was something that would have grown naturally and innately out of the earliest Christian movement. Moreover, we argued that even the authors of the New Testament appeared to have some awareness that they were writing Scripture. All of these factors together serve to challenge the “big bang” theory of canon that argues that the canon was forcibly planted within the soil of the church by later ecclesiastical powers (whether Irenaeus or others) who were keen to refute the heresies of their day. Instead, the evidence we have seen here suggests the canon began more like a seed that was present in the soil of the church from the very beginning, growing gradually and consistently over time.” (Michael J. Kruger, The Question Of Canon: Challenging The Status Quo In The New Testament Debate, 202-203 (Kindle Edition, emphasis added, M.T.); Downers Grove, Illinois; InterVaristy Press)

All of the evidence thus far demonstrates the genuineness of the New Testament Scriptures.

However, please notice one final proof of the genuineness of the New Testament : the testimony of the earliest enemies and adversaries of the church!

“Infidel writers of the first four centuries also wrote favoring our authors. The Emperor Julian, known as “the apostate,” wrote in 361 a work against Christianity; but he nowhere expressed a doubt as to either the books of Christians or their authors. It is almost certain that had occasion admitted of it, he would have challenged the genuineness of the books. Porphyry, universally conceded to have been the most formidable opponent to Christianity, wrote in 270, and spoke of Matthew as “their evangelist.” In 176, Celsus, esteemed by modern infidels as a wonderful philosopher, wrote a book against Christianity entitled A True Discourse, of which Origen has preserved fragments. But so unlike was he to his modern infidel brethren that he admitted the existence of the Christian or New Testament writings, and their genuineness…Whatever the reason, it must be apparent to every unprejudiced mind that earnest seekers after truth, who ignore such testimony accessible to the average scholar, are inexcusably guilty of trifling with indisputable evidence which would be convincing in any civil court. Such testimony has been provided in abundance by the friends and foes of the lowly Nazarene- our Lord in glory- and it proves that these”…holy men of God,” to whom their writings were assigned, “spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21).”” (James Todd, quoted by W.E. Vine, An Expository Dictionary of Old Testament Words, 167-168,; Old Tappan, NJ: Fleming H. Revell Company)

Everest sheds more light on these fascinating topics:

“All the early adversaries of Christianity granted the genuineness of the New Testament books. These adversaries were men of talent and learning. By worldly interests and intense hatred of Christianity they were urged to use against it every possible weapon. The fact that they did not show its sacred books to be spurious is proof that they were not able to do so….”Testimony of Julian. The Emperor Julian composed his work against Christianity in 361. He united talent, learning, power, and persecuting zeal. If anything could have been said against the genuineness of the New Testament he would have been eager to make his attack from this side, but he did not. He bore witness to the genuineness of the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. He concedes their early date and quotes them as the genuine works of their reputed authors. He quotes Romans, Corinthians, and Galatians. His whole attack assumes the genuineness and credibility of the New Testament…”2. Testimony of Hierocles. In 303 he was president of Bithynia; a cruel persecutor, and a sarcastic writer. He concedes the genuineness, and confines his efforts to the hunting up of internal flaws and contradictions. He refers to six of the eight authors of the New Testament. 3. Testimony of Porphyry. He was the most severe and formidable adversary of the primitive church…”He wrote about 270. He was well acquainted with the New Testament. He has plain references to Matthew, Mark, John, Acts, and Galatians. There is no trace of a suspicion that the sacred books were spurious. That he would have made this point, if possible, is evident from the fact that he did attack the book of Daniel in this manner…4. “Testimony of Celsus. He flourished about 176, and about 76 years after the death of the Apostle John. What we know about his work entitled ‘The True Word’ has been preserved by Origen. More than eighty quotations, made by him from the New Testament, have been thus preserved. His whole argument proceeds upon the concessions that the books he quoted were in existence, were held in high esteem by the churches, and were genuine. Thus by a plain and independent path we can trace the New Testament back to the Apostolic Age. It is also a remarkable fact that these bitter enemies are made to bear this unwilling, but decisive, testimony.” Harvey W. Everest, The Divine Demonstration: A Textbook Of Christian Evidence, 54-55; Nashville, TN; Gospel Advocate Company)

When the evidence is carefully weighed, we see that the New Testament Scriptures are, indeed, genuine.

Are The New Testament Scriptures Credible?

Now, we must examine whether or not the Apostles of Christ and their companions were accurate in the histories which they recorded.

One of the first evidences of the credibility of these Books is found in the early dates of their writings. While many teach that the Books of the New Testament were written late in the first century, the facts show that they were actually written very early on in the first century.

What kind of evidences are we talking about?

Let’s first consider this unpopular and oft criticized detail: there have been manuscripts of the New Testament Scriptures found among the well-known Dead Sea Scrolls! Cooper tells us:

“The caves at Qumran are famous for the hoard of Old Testament and other manuscripts that have been found there. But the thing which receives the least publicity (if any publicity at all) is the fact that the caves have also yielded fragments of New Testament books. This absence of publicity – this blanket denial of their identity is not to be wondered at. The fact of the matter is this, that these manuscripts were deposited in the caves at Qumran by the year AD 68 at the very latest, when Qumran and the surrounding area was overrun by the Roman 10th Legion, and according to the critics, the New Testament – especially the Gospels – had not yet been written by that time…Cave 4 at Qumran is of some interest to us here. In that cave was discovered a particular fragment known today as 4QAlpha. Though not actually a fragment of Mark’s Gospel – it was originally thought to be a medical text it does reflect the healing miracle of the blind man recorded in Mark 8:22- 26, and moreover contains the New Testament names of Caiaphas, Peter (the first time that this name has been found in an Hebrew/Aramaic document), and Aquila…Fragments of various New Testament books were themselves found in the caves of Qumran, most notably in Cave 7. One that is of particular interest is called 7Q5, and carries nothing less than a passage from Mark 6:52- 53. 3…identifying other fragments from Cave 7 as parts of the New Testament, especially fragment 7Q4 which contains 1 Timothy 3:16- 4:3….The discoveries in Cave 7 at Qumran – and the commendable diligence of O’Callaghan who identified them – proves that what the critics have been teaching all these years is wrong, misinformed and mistaken on all levels. Archaeology has never spoken plainer than it speaks right now. Copies of the New Testament books of Mark, 1 Timothy, James, Acts, Romans and 2 Peter (at least) were all in circulation by AD 68 at the very latest, and clearly years before. But what is more, they were in circulation internationally and not just locally amongst Christian groups or churches….We spoke earlier of the lack of publicity which surrounds the discovery of New Testament books – or rather their fragments – at Qumran, and their omission is pointedly displayed by Emanuel Tov, who has issued a ‘complete’ list of all the Biblical texts discovered in the Qumran caves. 22 It is indeed a prodigious and comprehensive list, except that when it comes to Cave 7 he omits all reference to the New Testament fragments which were discovered there….As we have seen, represented amongst these ‘unclassified’ fragments are the New Testament books of 1 Timothy (7Q4); Mark’s Gospel (7Q5) (7Q6, 1) (7Q7) (7Q15); James (7Q8); Acts (7Q6); Romans (7Q9); and 2 Peter (7Q10). How these can all be omitted from a list which claims to be ‘complete’ is something to be wondered at. (Bill Cooper, The Authenticity Of The New Testament: part One-The Gospels, 300-470 (Kindle Edition))

Speaking of these facts, Geisler has written:

“Jose *O’Callahan, a Spanish Jesuit paleographer, made headlines around the world in 1972 when he announced that he had translated a piece of the Gospel of Mark on a DSS fragment. This was the earliest known piece of Mark. Fragments from cave 7 had previously been dated between 50B.C. and A.D. 50 and listed under “not identified” and classified as “Biblical Texts.” O’Callahan eventually identified nine fragments….A date beforeA.D. 50 leaves no time for mythological embellishment of the records. They would have to be accepted as historical. It would also show Mark to be one of the earlier Gospels. Further, since these manuscripts are not originals but copies, it would reveal that the New Testament was “published”—copied and disseminated—during the life time of the writers. Itwould also reveal the existence of the New Testament canon during this early period, with pieces representing every major section of the New Testament: Gospels, Acts, and both Pauline and General Epistles.” (Norman Geisler, Baker Encyclopedia Of Christian Apologetics, 188 (Kindle Edition); Grand Rapids, Michigan; Baker Books)

Friends, the evidence is clear that the New Testament Scriptures started to be written at a very early date, well in the Eyewitness period. This is especially interesting when we consider the history of the Magdalene Papyrus (also known in some circles as the Jesus Papyrus):

“The Magdalen Papyrus includes three fragments which contain a total of 24 lines, written on both sides in the format of a codex rather than a scroll….In 1995, however, German archeologist and professor of New Testament history Carsten Peter Thiede argued that the Magdalen fragments were older than previously thought. [59] Yes, they were written as a codex rather than a scroll, he said, but that didn’t justify a younger date. He made a case they were written in the first century, during the actual lifetime of the apostles. Thiede had been examining the Magdalen fragments while they were in the custodianship of the Oxford library. He used a new scanning laser microscope to measure the height and length of the ink and even the angle of the stylus the scribe had used. Thiede did a paleographic comparison of the Magdalen fragments with four other first century manuscripts dated A.D. 58 from Qumran, ca A.D. 79 from Herculaneum, A.D. 73-74 from Masada and A.D. 65-66 from Oxyrhynchus. Thiede concluded from careful comparison of the letter shapes that P64 had been wrongly dated too late and was more likely written in the first century. If Thiede is correct, then P64 was copied while Matthew and the other eyewitnesses were still alive….These ancient fragments of the New Testament are one of the many pieces of evidence we have that the Gospels and epistles were written very early, by the apostles themselves, and certainly not by drunk monks in the Middle Ages.” (Chuck Missler, How We Got Our Bible, 1051-1080 (Kindle Edition); Coeur d’Alene, ID; Koinonia House)

Well, how early into the first century was the Magdalene Papyrus written? Cooper has well written:

“Our attention is drawn to the work of Dr Carsten Thiede, and his book, The Jesus Papyrus (see Bibliography). Suffice it here to say that a thorough and scientific analysis undertaken by Dr Thiede of the Gospel fragments known to scholars as the Magdalen Papyrus (named after Magdalen College Oxford, where it is kept), dates this particular copy of Matthew’s Gospel to times so close to the Resurrection, that it could easily have been copied or read by an eyewitness of our Lord’s entire ministry. To be brief, the Magdalen Papyrus was copied out between the mid-40s and AD 50. But we must also bear in mind that this particular papyrus was itself but a copy of an even earlier original, though by how many removes we cannot know.” (Bill Cooper, Old Light On The Roman Church: A Consideration In Four Parts Of Certain Neglected Areas Of Church History, 599-605 (Kindle Edition))

Many have, sadly, been weaned on the notion that the New Testament was not written and known for centuries after the time of Christ, when a council of the Roman Catholic church (allegedly) declared some of the books “inspired.”

Yet if this is true, how is it that the Apostle Paul refers to the Books of Luke and Matthew as “Scripture” (1 Timothy 5:18; Luke 10:7; Matthew 10:10)? Furthermore, if the Apostles did not know that their writings were inspired Scripture, why does the Apostle Peter refer to the writings of Paul as such (2 Peter 3:14-6)?

Also, the Apostles clearly establish in other words the authoritative nature of their writings (1 Corinthians 14:17; Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:27; 2 Thessalonians 2:15; 3:13).

The early Christians were very familiar with the New Testament Scriptures, and their authority:

“Here’s another astonishing fact: the early Church fathers—Origen, Clement, Tertullian, Irenaeus, Ignatius, Polycarp, etc.—prolifically cited the New Testament in their writings. Just a few of the early fathers alone account for 36,000 New Testament citations, but the number of such citations from all the Church fathers exceeds one million. “So extensive are these citations,” say Komoszewski, Sawyer, and Wallace, “that if all other sources for our knowledge of the text of the New Testament were destroyed, they would be sufficient alone for the reconstruction of practically the entire New Testament.” 71 And as Sir Fredric Kenyon observes, “The number of manuscripts of the New Testament, of early translations from it, and of quotations from it in the oldest writers of the Church, is so large that it is practically certain that the true reading of every doubtful passage is preserved in some one or other of these ancient authorities. This can be said of no other book in the ancient world.”” (David Limbaugh, Jesus On Trial: A Lawyer Affirms The Truth Of The Gospel, 4060-4066 (Kindle Edition); Washington, DC; Regnery Publishing)

In discussing the interesting development of the New Testament canon, another researcher has clearly pointed out that from the earliest times, the Books of the New Testament were well-known to the early church:

“The question we have been asking in this chapter is a simple one. At what point did Christians consider their own books to be “Scripture”? Was this a late-second-century phenomenon largely due to the influence of Irenaeus, as some scholars suggest? They often refer to them expressly as “Scripture” (sometimes introducing them with “it is written”) or regard them as possessing apostolic authority—which, functionally, would be on par with the authority of Scripture. While the boundaries of the church’s Scriptures during this early time were still fairly fluid (and would not be resolved for centuries), there seems to be little doubt that the church did, in fact, have Scriptures.” (Michael J. Kruger, The Question Of Canon: Challenging The Status Quo In The New Testament Debate, 195 (Kindle Edition); Downers Grove, Illinois; InterVarsity Press)

Now, why does the early writing of the New Testament Scriptures argue for the credibility of these Books and what they report?

First, the events which had taken place during the life of Christ would have been fresh and easily recalled within the minds of Christ’s Apostles.

Second, the early writing of these events would have been well within the lifetimes of the eyewitness period. Why would this matter? Simply stated, if the writers of the New Testament had been guilty of editing the facts about Jesus (or “fudging the facts,” as we might say), they would have been immediately exposed as frauds and Christianity would have died in its infancy. However, that is not what you see happening! Instead, the facts show that the enemies of Christianity freely acknowledged the basic facts put forward by the Apostles of Christ, yet simply refused to accept the theological implications of these important matters.

The early writing of the New Testament Books (especially the Gospels) is a strong evidence in favor of the credibility of these Scriptures.

Another important factor which argues for the credibility of the New Testament Scriptures is the fact that the Apostles often appealed to the testimony of clearly hostile witnesses in promoting their defense of the Gospel.

In discussing especially how some ancient pagan Roman documents confirm the credibility of Christ, Bill Cooper has well written:

“The chances of a local rumour doing the rounds in Jerusalem reaching the emperor’s ears back in Rome are extremely slight. To reach the emperor at all, the rumour would have to hitch a ride to Rome on the back of an official communication, and there is good evidence indeed that just such a communication was sent from Pontius Pilate to the Emperor Tiberius about the Crucifixion and the Resurrection of our Lord. While that is not something that the critics would like to hear, it is important enough for us to consider just what this evidence is. We need firstly to bear in mind the fact that such a communication – an update on events in the province of Judaea – would be nothing extraordinary. Such communications were an expected and everyday occurrence, and woe betide the governor who neglected to send them. At the least, dereliction, treasonous thoughts or sabotage would be suspected. Nevertheless, this report must have been something special, because it seems to have had a profound effect on Tiberius himself who received it, Tiberius putting a motion to the Senate to have this Jesus added to the gods of Rome. Happily, the Senate declined the invitation because they’d hitherto heard nothing about this Man….Now, just who was Tertullian writing to? Was it a friend or colleague? – a sympathiser of the Christians perhaps? No, by no means. He was writing to the magistrates of Carthage, to the very men who were then persecuting the Christians. To invite them to consult the state archives to test the truth of what he was saying was a brave move and a foolish one if the annals had not existed, or had told a story contrary to his own….Again the invitation to consult the state archives. Who was Justin writing to? none other than the emperor of Rome at that time, Antoninus Pius, his sons, and the Senate of Rome. That again is quite a readership, and Justin would have been the most foolish man on earth to invite a hostile emperor to consult the archives on Pontius Pilate if those records had not been there to consult. Moreover, those archives must have held papers on the Crucifixion of Jesus and His subsequent Resurrection, including a report on the rumour that Matthew records about the disciples being thought to have stolen His body. It’s a wonder that the critics forget to mention these things. But there’s more….In other words, what we have just read about the report from Pilate in Justin, Tertullian and Eusebius, would not be there for us to read unless that report had at one time existed, and had been available in the state archives for others to consult some two hundred years or more afterwards. It is as simple and as straightforward as that. The critics can howl that it isn’t true till they’re blue in the face if they wish, but eggs is eggs, and facts are facts are facts!”. (Bill Cooper, The Authenticity Of The New Testament: Part One-The Gospels,1272-1319 (Kindle Edition))

Even the writings of the ancient Jews confirm these same basic facts! In researching the writings of ancient Jewish traditions during the first century, another scholar has pointed out some of the ways that these rabbinic writings confirm the basic tenants of the New Testament:

“We learn from the Jewish sources that Jesus was the firstborn son of Mary (the rabbis). He had followers (Josephus) or gathered disciples (the rabbis); he taught them and worked miracles (Josephus, the rabbis). He was put on trial and died by formal execution (Josephus, the rabbis). Either the Jews alone carried out his trial and execution (the rabbis), or the Romans did in some cooperation with Jewish leaders (Josephus). Jesus’ followers claimed that he rose from the dead (the rabbis), and his movement continued (Josephus, the rabbis). Jesus’ brother James was a leading figure in Jerusalem after Jesus’ death (Josephus). While the main facts about Jesus’ life were known, very little if anything of his teaching was remembered.” (Robert E. Van Voorst, Jesus Outside The New Testament: An Introduction To The Ancient Evidence, 2100-2105 (Kindle Edition); Grand Rapids, Michigan; William B. Eerdman’s Publishing Company)

Still another important evidence regarding the credibility of the New Testament lies in the fact that the Apostles of Christ encouraged (and at times even commanded) Christians and unbelievers to carefully examine the evidences of the things which they were affirming (1 Corinthians 15:1-8; 1 Thessalonians 5:21; 1 John 4:1). If the Apostles had been trying to present a false manifesto of Jesus of Nazareth, they would not encourage people to carefully track down and examine he evidences; for them they would the risk of the entire scheme falling apart and Christianity being exposed as a deception before the movement even got started!

Finally, please consider that the writings of the Apostles have been carefully examined and scrutinized by the experts in legal representatives and have been found to be historically accurate.

First, please hear the testimony of Simon Greenleaf, who lived from 1783-1853. During his life, he was a professor of law at Harvard University. In fact, he produced the standard three volume set of books that are still used today to teach lawyers the various rules of legal conduct, as well as determining the criteria for determining the credibility of legal documents for examination in courts of law. When he applied his vast expertise and investigative skills to determine whether or not the New Testament Gospels were credible, what did he find?

“The great truths which the apostles declared, were, that Christ had risen from the dead, and that only through repentance from sin, and faith in him, could men hope for salvation. This doctrine they asserted with one voice, everywhere, not only under the greatest discouragements, but in the face of the most appalling terrors that can be presented to the mind of man. Their master had recently perished as a malefactor, by the sentence of a public tribunal. His religion sought to overthrow the religions of the whole world. The laws of every country were against the teachings of his disciples. The interests and passions of all the rulers and great men in the world were against them. The fashion of the world was against them. Propagating this new faith, even in the most inoffensive and peaceful manner, they could expect nothing but contempt, opposition, revilings, bitter persecutions, stripes, imprisonments, torments and cruel deaths. Yet this faith they zealously did propagate; and all these [pg 026] miseries they endured undismayed, nay, rejoicing. As one after another was put to a miserable death, the survivors only prosecuted their work with increased vigour and resolution. The annals of military warfare afford scarcely an example of the like heroic constancy, patience and unblenching courage. They had every possible motive to review carefully the grounds of their faith, and the evidences of the great facts and truths which they asserted; and these motives were pressed upon their attention with the most melancholy and terrific frequency. It was therefore impossible that they could have persisted in affirming the truths they have narrated, had not Jesus actually risen from the dead, and had they not known this fact as certainly as they knew any other fact. 53”. (Simon Greenleaf, LL.D., An Examination of the Testimony of the Four Evangelists, by the Rules of Evidence Administered in Courts of Justice. With an Account of the Trial of Jesus, 1356-1372 (Kindle Edition); A. Maxwell & Son, 32, Bell Yard, Lincoln’s Inn; W. Smith, 113, Fleet Street; Hodges & Smith, Dublin; T. & J. Clark, Edinburgh. England)

We could also add to this the testimony of J. Warmer Wallace, an expert homicide detective who likewise turned his learned expertise to the study of the New Testament Scriptures:

“We’ve examined the four important areas that jurors must consider when determining the reliability of eyewitnesses. The most reasonable inference is that the gospel writers were present, corroborated, accurate , and unbiased . If this is the case, we can conclude with confidence that their testimony is reliable . We’ve done the heavy lifting needed to determine the reliability of these accounts; we’ve been diligent and faithful as jurors and have considered the evidence. It’s time to make a decision.” (J. Warner Wallace, Cold-Case Christianity: A Homicide Detective Investigates The Claims Of The Gospels, 4547 (Kindle Edition); Colorado Springs, Colorado; DavidCook)

We could also include along with these criteria the facts of the apostolic suffering for their testimony, as well as the findings of archaeology, and it all together leads to the same inescapable conclusion: the New Testament Scriptures are, indeed, credible.

Do The New Testament Scriptures Teach That Jesus Christ Is The Son Of God?

Having established that the New Testament Scriptures are both genuine and credible, we need only ask one if these documents teach that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (keeping in mind the definition of this phrase that we put forth earlier in this inquiry).

Please consider the following references:

John 1:1-In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 5:18-Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

John 5:22-23-22  For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, 23  that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
John 8:58-Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

John 10:30- I and My Father are one.

Philippians 2:5-7-5  Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6  who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7  but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.

2 Peter 1:1-Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

These references (and many others could be cited) all demonstrate that the New Testament Scriptures affirm the Deity Of Jesus Christ, and establish that He is, in fact, the Son of God.

Adding all of these facts together, we may conclude that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Since our initial argument is in valid format, and since the premises have been proven true, then the conclusion MUST follow.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Jesus Christ was sent by God to pay the price for the sins of mankind. He died for us, was buried, and arose from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-8). Even today, He commands believers (John 8:24), to repent of sin (Acts 17:30-31), confess their faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God (Acts 8:35-39), and be baptized into Christ (Acts 2:38; 22:16).

Why not obey Him today?

If you are a child of God who has turned away from Christ, why not today repent of that sin and confess it to the Lord in prayer (1 John 1:8-2:2)?

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Aliens: Extraterrestrial Friends Or Interdimensional Foes?

By: Mark Tabata (Evangelist)

Many of the people that I work with in the Hazard area have had experiences with “alien” encounters.

Oh, I am not just talking about strange sightings in the night skies (although there have been many of these).

I am talking about people that I have worked with who have told me about encounters with “aliens” that go something like this…

I was putting my child on the school bus and I went back inside the house. As I was sitting on the sofa, I looked over and I saw a little gray “man” with black eyes standing in the doorway. He told me that he needed to speak with me (although he didn’t really speak, but I heard his words in my head). The next thing I remember, I was picking my child up off of the bus. Several hours had passed, and I have no recollection of that time.

I was at home in bed. I opened my eyes and there were these little gray persons standing around me. I started to float above my bed, and I panicked. I called out on Jesus to save me, and I fell back on the bed and the gray men disappeared. My girlfriend woke up, but hadn’t seen any of these things.

I was out on the lake with my friend, doing some night-fishing. All of a sudden, this huge ship was over us. It stayed there for probably ten minutes, and my friend and I didn’t know what to do….Some time later, it just flew away. It didn’t make any noise, and we did not smell any gasoline or fuel…Later, under hypnosis, we both remembered being taken aboard the ship by these little gray people. They did things to us, but I didn’t remember a lot about that.

I was taken to a ship, and experiments were done on my reproductive organs. The beings put some kind of object in my nose. Later, a doctor found it and removed it-but it dissolved before it could be examined. Later, I was visited again and told that I was being used to help save a race of aliens. I know a lot of people will think I am making these up, but I will take a lie detector test any time someone wants me to.

These stories could be multiplied, many times over.

These are regular, everyday people.

These people are often afraid to speak up about their experiences, fearing ridicule and persecution.

More then one has been told that they were just “smokin too much reefer,” or “trippin on the wrong shrooms.”

As such, they face potential character assassination and scorn from family, friends, and co-workers.

Their employers could take notice, and livelihoods could be affected.

Despite it all, they know that they have not made these things up or hallucinated them; so the question remains, “What is going on?”

Many are convinced that the beings which they encounter in these experiences are extraterrestrial (originating from another planet in our universe).

However, I am persuaded that these beings are spiritual in nature, and that they may be biblically identified as demonic.

The Parallels Of Modern Abduction Stories With Ancient Demonic Encounters

In studying the Bible teaching of fallen angels and nephilim with several other ancient texts which discuss spiritism, one researcher has catalogued several similarities between these and modern day abduction experiences:

“Disturbing tales from the abduction phenomena echo ancient encounters with fallen angels, demons, and forms of Nephilim. The victims in the abductions are usually paralyzed at the start of the encounter. Aliens are generally described as rough-skinned, thin-lipped, long-necked, viper-like beings, similar to Nephilim but smaller. Remember, angels possess changeling qualities in our earthly realm; angels could easily alter their size and appearance at will. All these descriptions, common in most abductions, neatly parallel records of ancient encounters with fallen angels, complete with those fallen angels promising knowledge and power. It must be noted, as well, these ancient fallen angels also promised godhood, as witnessed by what took place in Eden with Eve and Adam and Satan. One further wonders, are changelings attempting to create Nephilim hybrids through DNA to skirt around creation laws? Not only do contemporary alien encounters echo ancient encounters with demons, Nephilim, and fallen angels, but also they reflect a commonality and an inexplicable kinship with fairy folk, according to Eason. Author W. Y. Evans-Wentz notes the ancients named the inhabitants of the otherworld: gods (fallen angels); genies (Jinn); daemons (demons); shades; and spirits, which the ancient and modern Celts referred to as gods and fairies. 4 Many of the less benign aliens of today, according to Eason, portray an eerie kinship to the likeness of goblins and gnomes of fairy mythology. Goblins and trolls were described with eyes like glowing coals, with withered crones. Only in Nordic legends were some fairy folk known to be tall and noble; in most other legends, fairy folk were small beings of mischief and evil. Trolls, goblins, gnomes, and other similar creatures come in many different sizes; they have grotesque, fleshy faces and are very hairy. In the 1954 alien abduction that transpired in Chic-Cerro de las Tres Torres, Venezuela, witnesses described the aliens as dwarf-like, hairy beings. In 1955, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, five tiny, goblin-like beings with wrinkled skins and large eyes and ears were witnessed. 5 Most documented accounts describe famous aliens known today as “the grays.” Fairies that kidnapped children were known as the “grey [sic] neighbors” by the Shetlanders; these fairies were small, gray, goblin-and-troll-like creatures. 6 These mythological fairies were a Celtic conception to describe small people who can become invisible and who were feared abductors of children. 7…Alien abductions hold familiar kinship with fairy folk and fairy abductions. For example, Cassandra Eason notes fairies have a need to reproduce with humans, 9 ostensibly like aliens. Fairies never abduct old people—only babies, young men, and young women, much like aliens. In a similar fashion to alien abductions, the victims’ minds remain blank of what was done and said to them in fairy abductions. 10 Goblins, elves, trolls, and gnomes are known in mythology as beings that are described as “grays.” They are gray-skinned have huge, oval heads; small, almond-like eyes; and spindly limbs. And they are eager to breed with humans to modify and refresh their genetic makeup so that they might continue to survive. 11 Again, this is an eerily accurate description of the modern alien descriptions, as well as modern Hollywood creations such as the Asgarde from the Star Gate series. Janet Bord concludes fairy abductions utilized the very same claim staked by aliens today, whereby they need to mate with humans because they need an injection of new genes to bolster their weakened genetic makeup. 12 Gene manipulation through eugenics was the same apostasy endeavored by the Nazis and the New Man project, as well as the far-left movement of liberals, the Progressives, whose doctrines dominated the first four decades of the twentieth century but died a sudden death after World War II, the fall of Nazism, and the rise of Communism. Beware of the resurgence of the contemporary Progressive movement of modern, liberal political parties, for Progressives are still married to the old doctrines of the New Man, the New World Order, and Babylon. Remember, too, this is how at least one race of Nephilim was created in ancient times.” (Gary Wayne, The Genesis 6 Conspiracy: How Secret Societies And The Descendants Of Giants Plan To Enslave Humankind, 7219-7255 (Kindle Edition); Trusted Books)

Why Are They Doing These Things?

What conclusions does Wayne draw from his in-depth studies of these matters?

“It is my contention that these modern alien encounters are nothing more than demonic and/ or angelic encounters, crafted to reflect the modern attitudes of humankind as we endeavor to interpret our place in the universe. Although modified for technology and its rapid advancements, they are a finely sculptured, self-glorified image of delusion that fallen angels are delivering, deceiving the modern mind through its own aspirations, just as they did with fairies and goblins with our ancestors. The advanced technology of alien encounters, along with all of its other alluring mythos, has been uniquely brewed to deceive contemporary humans. This magical and mysterious deception is an enticing and intoxicating cocktail for the modern mindset which is designed to lead our world astray; further away from God and Jesus; and into the universal world of Babel and false light, heralded by eastern religions, New Age, and Masonic fraternities, inclusive of the ultra-diabolical Illuminati. Therefore, expect that alien encounters will continue to increase until the momentum dictates a wondrous day when humankind is greeted with a formal first encounter of the fourth kind.” (Gary Wayne, The Genesis 6 Conspiracy: How Secret Societies And The Descendants Of Giants Plan To Enslave Humankind, 7264-7272 (Kindle Edition); Trusted Books)

Nor is Wayne alone in his contention that these “aliens” are interdimensional beings intent on deceiving mankind.

Jacques Vallee, a respected and devoted ufologist, believes that the belief systems of humanity are intentionally being warped by these visitors, and that this is the primary goal to which they aspire:

“How can we verify whether such conditioning is in fact operating?…If the phenomenon is forcing us through a learning curve then it MUST mislead us….If this is so, then UFOs can never be analyzed or conceived, because they are the means through which man’s concepts are being rearranged. All we can do is to trace their effects on humans….What is the variable being controlled in this control system? Thermostats control temperature; gyroscopes control the direction in which a rocket flies. What could a paranormal phenomenon control? I suggest that it is human belief that is being controlled and conditioned.” (Jacques Vallee, The Invisible College: What A Group Of Scientists Has Discovered About UFO Influence On The Human Race, 2993-3009 (Kindle Edition); San Antonio, TX; Anomalist Books)

In another one of his books, Vallee goes into more detail, explaining once again that a likely explanation for the “alien” visitors is that they are not extraterrestrial, but interdimensional:

“Somebody is going to an awful lot of trouble to convince the world that we are threatened by beings from outer space….The genuine UFO phenomenon, as I have shown in Confrontations, is associated with a form of nonhuman consciousness that manipulates space and time in ways we do not understand….It is curious to observe that even scientifically trained researchers who accept the idea of multiple universes, or the few ufologists who understand the idea that space-time could be folded to allow almost instantaneous travel from one point of our universe to another, still cling emotionally to the notion that any nonhuman form of consciousness is necessarily from outer space….The simple truth is this: if there is a form of life and consciousness that operates on properties of space-time we have not yet discovered, then it does not have to be extraterrestrial. It could come from any place and any time, even from our own environment….The entities could be multidimensional beyond space-time itself. They could even be fractal beings. The earth could be their home port.” (Jacques Vallee, Revelation: Alien Contact And Human Deception, 3527-3543 (Kindle Edition); San Antonio, TX; Anomalist Books)

The Connections Of Abduction Experiences With Occultism

It is also worth considering that many of the abduction stories involve more than a hint of occultism and spiritualistic practice. Vallee points out in another excellent book:

“There is another very important aspect to the entire abduction problem that has never been considered seriously by American ufology, obsessed as it is with immediate facts and first-order explanations. By ignoring this other aspect, we reduce considerably our chances of understanding the entire question. What I am referring to is the simple fact that abduction stories are not specific to the UFO phenomenon and certainly did not begin with Betty and Barney Hill in 1961. I pointed out in Invisible College that the structure of abduction stories was identical to that of occult initiation rituals. Several years before, I had shown in Passport to Magonia that contact with ufonauts was only a modern extension of the age-old tradition of contact with nonhuman consciousness in the form of angels, demons, elves, and sylphs. Such contact includes abduction, ordeal (including surgical operations), and sexual intercourse with the aliens. It often leaves marks and scars on the body and the mind, as do UFO abductions.” (Jacques Vallee, Confrontations: A Scientist’s Search For Alien Contact, 2522-2527 (Kindle Edition); San Antonio, TX; Anomalist Books)

Other ufologists have been noticing the occult nature of many UFO experiences:

“In the final years of his life, Dr. Hynek no longer believed in the extraterrestrial theory for the origin of UFOs. We had many conversations about the subject, and he expressed his doubts that UFOs were physical craft from other star systems.. To quote Dr. Hynek, “I have come to support less and less the idea that UFOs are nuts-and-bolts spacecrafts from other worlds. There are just too many things that go against that theory. To me, it seems ridiculous that a technologically advanced race would travel great distances to do relatively stupid things like stop cars, collect soil samples, and frighten people. I think we must begin to re-examine the evidence; we must look closer to home for the answer. I think we should consider that UFOs come from other dimensions, a parallel reality, a universe that exists in the same place as ours, but at a different frequency, so to speak.” Hynek also started to see the connection between UFO reports and certain types of psychic phenomena, because there are many UFO cases that have poltergeists, apparitions, strange sounds and lights, and other types of psychic manifestations attached to them. Over the many years that I have been researching the phenomenon, I have found this to be true. Quite a number of UFO case studies are like ghost stories rather than encounters with spaceships and beings from another star system.” (Philip Imbrogno, Interdimensional Universe: The New Science Of U.F.O.’s, Paranormal Phenomena, & Otherdimensional Beings, 1147-1153 (Kindle Edition); Woodbury, Minnesota; Llewllellyn Publications)

In fact, the single greatest UFO story in modern history (the Roswell encounter) had a very interesting occult nature that many are not aware of. Speaking of a gentleman named Jack Parsons, we learn:

“Described as a charismatic genius, as well as an eccentric mystic, Jack Whiteside Parsons endeavored to create a passageway or window into our world in 1946. He was a key founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The inventor of Hitler’s V-2 “revenge weapon” and leader of the Operation Paperclip rocket development team, Wernher von Braun, referred to him as the “father of modern rocketry.”…Destined to become a talented chemical engineer and inventor, he was expelled from a military academy for blowing up toilets and claimed to have successfully invoked Satan to appear to him at the age of 13. Parsons became a member of the Aleister Crowley headed, Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), in 1941 and joined the California based branch, known as The Church of Thelema. (Crowley defined Thelema as: “The science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with will.”)…While practicing magic rituals as the head of the church of Thelema, Parsons acquired a mansion in South Pasadena that he developed into a bohemian commune, and welcomed any “exotic types” to join. The commune later became known as the “Parsonage.”…Through his association with Crowley and work in the OTO, Parsons came to believe in the reality of magic (spelled “magick” according to Crowley) as a force that could be explained through quantum physics. He believed that he could bring about the incarnation of a Thelemite goddess that he called “Babalon” onto Earth by altering the constraints of normal space-time through his will via the practice of Thelema. Parsons called the magical operation he was planning the “Babalon Working”, and allowed Hubbard to take part in it as his documenting “scribe”, since he believed Hubbard to be exceptionally perceptive at detecting magical phenomena. Both Parsons and Hubbard believed in Thelema magic so completely that they went out into the Mojave Desert and performed the Babalon working, which was nothing less than a specific effort to “punch a hole” between realms. The final ritual took place in January 1946. Jack Parson believed, as did Van Braun, L. Ron Hubbard, and Aleister Crowley, that powerful non-human entities existed, but in a realm somehow separate from man. Although there seemed to be a prohibition on the type and quantity of interaction allowed, that prohibition could be altered by man’s activity on earth. It is worth recognizing that the Roswell event occurred one year after the Thelemic ritual in the Mojave Desert, as well as a huge increase in UFO sightings that continue to this day. The story of L. Ron Hubbard and Jack Parsons’ Babalon Working illustrates that the nature of the UFO phenomenon is more profound than the majority living today realize.” (Mark A. Flynn, “Foreword” in Josh Peck, Cherubim Chariots: Exploring The Extradimensional Hypothesis-Extradimensional Vehicles, Ancient Nephilim Technology, and Interstellar Prophecies Revealed!, 168-206 (Kindle Edition))

Nearly every single person that I have worked and studied with who have had encounters with “aliens” has included some connection to occultism. The persons have usually been involved in witchcraft, necromancy (attempting to summon the dead through devices such as ouija boards and electronic voice phenomena), or various forms of paganism.

We are warned in Scripture that engaging in any kind of willful sin can open doorways for Satan and his forces to take advantage of (cf. Ephesians 4:26-27).

The Authority Of Jesus

Considering the strong evidences that these “aliens” are demonic in origin, it should not surprise us that they are subject to the authority of Jesus Christ.

In the Bible, demonic activity is brought to a screeching halt when the authority of Jesus Christ is invoked. For example:

Matthew 8:16-When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,

Mark 1:25-27-25  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26  And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. 27  Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

Would it surprise you to learn that the authority of Christ has the ability to stop UFO Abduction experiences?

One former ufologist has brought forth an incredible book which describes several encounters of persons who (through invoking the name of Jesus Christ) had their “alien” experiences stopped.

“The next section of this book houses the testimonies of people who have found that the name of Jesus Christ is the only effective way of stopping alien abductions. The people whose stories you will read have had success stopping alien abduction. They have found that the name of Jesus is all powerful and that the entities can’t manifest as aliens when they are unmasked for what they really are. We now present to you the testimonials of just a few of those who want their stories known. These people have found the answer. If you are looking for the answer then perhaps their accounts will help you. In their accounts you will see many of their stories share many similarities. You will see that they came to the same realizations and they came to the same answer for ending their dilemma.” (David Ruffino & Joseph Jordan, Unholy Communion: The Alien Abduction Phenomenon, Where It Originates And How It Stops, 5095-5102 (Kindle Edition); Crane; Defender Publishing House)

E.T. Does Not Want To Phone Home

We are often told that the “aliens” are benevolent creatures who are kind and intent on helping humanity, or simply need our help.

However, the evidence shows quite a different picture!

“Former abductee-turned-researcher, the late Dr. Karla Turner, also derived some disturbing conclusions based upon her own experiences, and her research of other victims. Some of her observations follow: • Aliens can alter our perceptions of our surroundings. • Aliens can control what we think we see. They can appear to us [in] any number of guises and shapes. • Aliens can be present with us in an invisible state and can make themselves only partially visible. • Abductees receive marks on their bodies other than the well-known scoops and straight-line scars. These other marks include single punctures, multiple punctures, large bruises, three and four fingered claw marks, and triangles of every possible sort. • Female abductees often suffer serious gynecological problems after their alien encounters, and sometimes these problems lead to cysts, tumors, cancer of the breast and uterus, and to hysterectomies. • A surprising number of abductees suffer from serious illnesses they didn’t have before their encounters. These have led to surgery, debilitation, and even death from causes the doctors can’t identify. • Abductees often encounter more than one sort of alien during an experience, not just the grays. Every possible combination of gray, reptoid, insectoid, blond, and widow’s peak have been seen during single abductions, aboard the same craft or in the same facility. • Abductees report being scoffed at, jeered at, and threatened by their alien captors… . Unknown fluids are injected into some abductees. • Abductees —“virgin” cases —report being taken to underground facilities where they see grotesque hybrid creatures, nurseries of hybrid humanoid fetuses, and vats of colored liquid filled with parts of human bodies. • Abductees report seeing other humans in these facilities being drained of blood, being mutilated, flayed, and dismembered, and stacked, lifeless, like cords of wood. Some abductees have been threatened that they, too, will end up in this condition if they don’t cooperate with their alien captors. • Aliens come into homes and temporarily remove young children, leaving their distraught parents paralyzed and helpless. In cases where a parent has been able to protest, the aliens insist that “The children belong to us.” • Aliens perform extremely painful experiments or procedures on abductees, saying that these acts are necessary, but give no explanation why… . Painful genital and anal probes are performed, on children as well as adults. • Aliens make predictions of an imminent period of global chaos and destruction. They say that a certain number of humans … will be “rescued” from the planet in order to continue the species, either on another planet or back on Earth after the destruction is over. Many abductees report they don’t believe their alien captors and foresee instead a much more sinister use of the “rescued” humans.[20] Turner also made the following comment: In every instance from this list, there are multiple reports from unrelated cases, confirming that such bizarre details are not the product of a single deranged mind. These details are convincing evidence that, contrary to the claims of many UFO researchers, the abduction experience isn’t limited to uniform pattern [sic] of events. This phenomenon simply can’t be explained in terms of crossbreeding experiments or scientific research into the human physiology… . Before we allow ourselves to believe in the benevolence of the alien interaction, we should ask, do enlightened beings need to use the cover of night to perform good deeds? Do they need to paralyze us and render us helpless to resist? Do angels need to steal our fetuses? Do they need to manipulate our children’s genitals and probe our rectums? Are fear, pain, and deception consistent with high spiritual motives?[21] Vallée was right. These beings do act deceptively. They also act dishonestly. One would have good reason to be suspicious of their motives, despite their yarns about being here to help us. These beings say one thing and do another. They talk about doing good but they actually behave abominably. People are scarred, physically and emotionally, for the rest of their lives by such experiences.” (Gary Bates, Alien Intrusion: UFOs And The Evolution Connection, 5273-5323 (Kindle Edition); Powder Springs, GA; Creation Book Publishers)

The Gospel Of The “Aliens”

Finally, if any doubt remains as to the origin and nature of these creatures, we only need to listen to the message which they themselves are “preaching.”

What do they tell the people that they abduct?

Do these “aliens” have a message for mankind?

Indeed they do!

“If we were really being contacted by highly advanced extraterrestrial civilizations, one might expect some evidence for it in the thousands of messages that have been dutifully recorded by their human contacts. Unfortunately, these messages do not reflect a highly advanced scientific culture. Rather, they reflect the decadence of ancient paganism and the occult. In fact, the messages of the alleged extraterrestrials, beginning in the early 1950s, is little different from the message of modern New Age religion. One could even argue that it was the UFO contactees who really began the modern New Age movement, and not the pundits of the 1970s. 117 Nevertheless, we have examined scores of such messages, and, as many researchers have noted, none can deny that they offer us the same old occultism….So what are the messages from these advanced extraterrestrials deep in space? According to scores of books by contactees that we have read, they teach 1) that biblical religion is false and outdated; 2) that man must develop his psychic ability; 3) that we are at the threshold of a New Age of occult enlightenment; 4) that God and man or the creation are part of the same divine essence (pantheism) and 5) that extradimensional entities are now present to assist mankind in leaving the “old ways” and adjusting to the New Age of spiritual advancement. Nor should we neglect the recurring theme that some forms of drastic authoritarian social control may be necessary to assure the survival of this planet. 121″ (Dr. John Ankerberg & Dr. John Weldon, The Facts On UFO’s, 526-544 (Kindle Edition); ATRI Publishing)

Of course, this leads to several obvious questions:

“Further, in light of the messages given by the UFO entities, how credible is it to think that literally thousands of genuine extraterrestrials would fly millions or billions of light years simply to teach New Age philosophy, deny Christianity, and support the occult? Why would they do this with the preponderance of such activity already occurring on this planet? And why would the entities actually possess and inhabit people just like demons do if they were really advanced extraterrestrials? Why would they consistently lie about things which we know are true, and why would they purposely deceive their contacts? All this is why a number of UFO researchers have concluded that UFOs are real but do not necessarily originate from other planets.” (Dr. John Ankerberg & Dr. John Weldon, The Facts On UFO’s, 204-210 (Kindle Edition); ATRI Publishing).

When we add all the facts together, we see powerful evidence that the modern UFO phenomena is not about little gray men from other planets trying to guide and help humanity.

The evidence is extremely strong that these beings are demonic in nature, that they are intent on hurting mankind while pretending to help us, and that they are deceptive to the core.

Furthermore, the connections with abductees and occultism, the similarity of abduction experiences to ancient demonic accounts, the extremely anti-Christian message of the “visitors,” and the success of invocation of Christ to suspend Abduction experiences, clearly demonstrates that these “aliens” are agents of Satan.

Friends, there is a war going on around us-and it is a war that we are involved in. We do not wrestle against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:10-12).

In Jesus Christ, there is salvation and victory available for anyone who will come to Him (Matthew 11:28-30). God has give us the victory through Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection on the third day from the grace (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

Why not today accept His incredible gift of redemption?

Acts 2:38-Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

If you are an erring child of God who has turned away from Christ, why not repent today?

1 John 1:9-If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

A Doctor Analyzes The Theory Of Evolution

By: Mark Tabata (Evangelist)

The more I learn about the “theory” of evolution, the more amazed I am that so many in our society have accepted this pseudoscience hook, line, and sinker.

Oh, please don’t misunderstand me.

I am well aware that this theory of origins has been force-fed into the impressionable minds of children in the American school system for generations.

I am cognizant of the fact that the public media in the United States has a definite bias and agenda towards promoting the “goo-to-you” theory.

Too, I am fully aware that many-even in the Lord’s church-have sacrificed Scriptural truth to appease the pro-Darwinists of our day and age.

Yet what truly amazes me is how this theory is still so strongly endorsed by so many, in light of the numerous irrefutable problems and gaping contradictions that exist within the system, and especially when such are being continually expounded upon by well-educated scientists and researchers!

Let me give you an example.

One physician has written an excellent study on the numerous problems of Darwinism theory. In the conclusion of his fascinating book, What Darwin Didn’t Know: A Doctor Dissects The Theory Of Evolution, Dr. Geoffrey Simmons writes:

“The ship of evidence that carries Darwin’s theories is full of gaping holes, and yet a huge following will not allow it to sink. Their belief is as strong as that of those who oppose evolution, who are often mocked as “religious”—yet, like a religion, the “science” of evolution is actually based on a belief system.” (Geoffrey Simmons M.D., What Darwin Didn’t Know: A Doctor Dissects The Theory Of Evolution, 301 (Kindle Edition); Eugene, Oregon; Harvest House Publishers)

In fact, Dr. Simmons explains that if Darwin were alive today, his writings would probably not even be published:

“The theory of evolution is like a connect-the-dots game. Some dots are clearly connected, such as wolves to dogs, but the vast majority, such as reptiles to mammals, cannot be connected without millions of intermediary dots (species). Darwin’s theories do not come close to explaining the enormous complexity even within a simple cell (let alone the entire body), the whole-package phenomenon (WPP), and irreducible complexity. The fact that a series of useless steps is needed to accomplish a tiny task forcefully argues against evolution. The fact that all bodily functions require the convergence of many useless steps and useless systems (when each is viewed in isolation) excludes evolution as an option. The presumed multiple mutations leading up to mankind would have had to be organized, purposeful, targeted, simultaneous, frequent, safe, and too numerous to count. The original blueprint would have had to contain all of the subsequent blueprints, such as how to make the next steps out of the many on the way to manufacturing insulin, hemoglobin, adrenalin, or growth hormone. It would also have had to include how to use these chemicals, how to control their concentrations (feedback loops), how to replace them, how to keep them from interacting with each other, how to concentrate them in areas or at times of need, how to use them within each cell, and how to dispose of them….Darwin knew little of genetics, hardly anything about human physiology, and nothing of conception. He could not tell the difference between a kidney cell and a liver cell, nor did he know they existed. His writings included inflammatory, sexist, and bigoted comments. He rarely gave credit to any scientific source. No such scientific article would be accepted for publication nowadays….Very few educators seem to have taken an unbiased, in-depth look at the data. By observing farmers breed animals to get a better version, Darwin deduced that man could eventually breed one species into another. Simply stated, by making horses smaller and smaller, one might eventually get a dog or a cat. If Darwin’s writings were scrutinized by today’s standards, he probably would not be published. No one has ever shown that one species can change into another. Yet Darwin wrote that bears, who prefer to keep their heads above water, could evolve into whales that can dive many fathoms beneath the water’s surface, sustain themselves permanently out at sea, withstand incredible hypothermia, migrate thousands of miles each year, and successfully give birth underwater. Not to mention such factors as growing blubber, shrinking four extremities, shedding all hair, growing fins, and developing a subsonic communication system.” (Geoffrey Simmons M.D., What Darwin Didn’t Know: A Doctor Dissects The Theory Of Evolution, 301-303 (Kindle Edition); Eugene, Oregon; Harvest House Publishers)

What About The Fossil Record?

The esteemed doctor goes on to summarize still more problems of Darwinism which arise from the Fossil Record.

While I disagree with the millions and billions of years dates that are here mentioned (based on Scriptural and scientific reasons), Mr. Simmons comments pose another serious problem for Darwinism:

“Flies found in amber that is estimated to be 225 million years old are the same as today’s flies. The giraffe, with its incredibly long neck, has not changed in two million years, and it has no shorter-neck predecessors among the fossils. Rodents also appeared suddenly in the fossil record. Fish arrived without preceding fish-like fossils. Insects showed up without any precedents. Thousands of new species, discovered at the Burgess Shale in Canada and at a counterpart in China, exploded on the scene during the Cambrian period (sometimes called the biological big bang) 540 million years ago. No predecessor fossils have ever been found for 99 percent of some quite large and weird-looking animals. The opabinia had five eyes; there were worms with thorny noses to snag prey; and we’ve even found evidence of crawling creatures with eyes on the ends of stalks. There are no new phyla since the Cambrian period. Most species, according to the fossil record, evolved very little, if at all, before becoming extinct; the life expectancy of a species of animal might have extended a hundred thousand generations or a few million years, yet each generation continued to look much like, if not identical to, the previous generations. Take the beetle. It has not changed in two million years. Or the bowfin fish, which has not changed in 100 million years. The lungfish has not changed in 350 million years. Herbert Nilsson of Lund University, Sweden, stated, “It is not even possible to make a caricature of evolution [Darwin’s gradualism] out of paleobiological facts. The fossil material is now so complete that the lack of transitional series cannot be explained by the scarcity of material. The deficiencies are real, they will never be filled.” Or consider the words of paleontologist Steven Stanley: “The known fossil record is not, and never has been in accord with gradualism.” Or those of paleontologist David Raup: “Different species usually appear and disappear from the fossil record without showing the transitions that Darwin postulated.” Or those of biologist and curator of the American Museum of Natural History, Ernst Mayr: “With curious frequency it is even stated today that Darwin’s method was largely one of speculation and deduction.” Or those of Francis Hitching in The Neck of the Giraffe, who states that most scientists now discount the idea of the lungfish having evolved into an amphibian, based on its head structure and lack of true legs.” (Geoffrey Simmons M.D., What Darwin Didn’t Know: A Doctor Dissects The Theory Of Evolution, 303-305 (Kindle Edition); Eugene, Oregon; Harvest House Publishers)

Genetics: Friend Or Foe?

In describing how genetics cause even more of a huge catastrophe for the proponents of the theory of macroevolution, Simmons discusses the findings of modern day science:

“Stasis and extinction are the patterns seen in fossils. Freaks of nature are shunned, such as a zebra born without stripes. Animals will often kill different-looking or different-acting offspring even if they might grow up to be stronger or faster (but how would they know?). Once in every ten million cell divisions, a cell makes a copying mistake. The chance of the mistake passing into the next generation is one in two. The odds are six to one that it will disappear by the tenth generation and fifty to one that it will be gone by the hundredth generation.” (Geoffrey Simmons M.D., What Darwin Didn’t Know: A Doctor Dissects The Theory Of Evolution,305 (Kindle Edition); Eugene, Oregon; Harvest House Publishers)

Yet someone may ask, “Mark, that is pretty incredible: but if the Earth really is billions of years old, wouldn’t that be enough time for these favorable generic changes to take place?”

I’m glad you asked. Let’s allow Dr. Simmons to answer:

“According to F.B. Livingston, it would take approximately 20,000 generations, or 400,000 years, for an advantageous gene to spread among the hominid populations of the Pleistocene Era. If we are descendants of the famous Lucy, the australopithecine skull found in Ethiopia in 1974 and thought to be three million years old, then there would have been time for only seven advantageous genes to have changed. That’s barely enough of a change to tell a difference, let alone make a monkey into a person. Some scientists think that one beneficial mutation happens per 20,000 mutations. Or reverse this: 19,999 out of 20,000 mutations are useless, dangerous, or quickly diluted out. To calculate the statistical chance of man’s DNA codes having so come about—correctly and by mere chance—multiply 6,000,000,000 by a number just short of infinity. Nesse and Williams estimate the likelihood of any gene being altered as one in a million per generation—and most often these changes are either lethal or lead to freaks…. According to Richard Milton, who wrote Shattering the Myths of Darwinism, the chances of forming protein and self-replicating DNA randomly are as likely as “winning the state lottery by finding the winning ticket in the street, and then continuing to win the lottery every week for a thousand years by finding the winning ticket in the street each time” (in other terms, one chance in 1065). (Geoffrey Simmons M.D., What Darwin Didn’t Know: A Doctor Dissects The Theory Of Evolution, 305-307 (Kindle Edition); Eugene, Oregon; Harvest House Publishers)

The Bottom Line

After highlighting several other problems with the theory of evolution, Dr. Simmons concludes:

“I am not a theologian, nor do I pretend to be. I’m merely a collector and analyzer of biological and medical facts. The data, as I see it, points directly to an Intelligent Designer, much like a car speaks for an automaker, a soufflé for a chef, and a play for a play-wright.” (Geoffrey Simmons M.D., What Darwin Didn’t Know: A Doctor Dissects The Theory Of Evolution, 309 (Kindle Edition); Eugene, Oregon; Harvest House Publishers).

So Then Why Do So Many Accept Science Fiction Over Science?

Perhaps you are wondering, “If the evidence is so strongly against the theory of evolution, then why do so many still believe in and advocate it?”

I believe the words of Richard Lewontin provide the answer for that question.

In acknowledging some of the many nearly innumerable issues with Darwinism “science,” we are told why so many evolutionists still adhere to the theory:

““Our willingness to accept scientific claims against common sense is the key to an understanding of the real struggle between science and the supernatural.   “We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs, in spite of its failure to fulfill many of its extravagant promises of health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism.   “It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to accept a material explanation of the phenomenal world, but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes to create an apparatus of investigation and a set of concepts that produce material explanations, no matter how counter-intuitive, no matter how mystifying to the uninitiated. Moreover, that materialism is absolute, FOR WE CANNOT ALLOW A DIVINE FOOT IN THE DOOR.” (Richard Lewontin, “Billions and Billions of Demons,” The New York Review, p. 31, January 9, 1997-emphasis added, M.A.T.)

Are you saying that the reason why evolutionists continue to hold to this ridiculous theory is because of a bias against God?

And, there are other evolutionary scientists who have been as forthcoming about this as Lewiston:

“Writing in Nature as long ago as 1929, biologist D. M. S. Watson brazenly conceded, ‘The theory of evolution itself [is] a theory universally accepted, not because it can be proved by logically coherent evidence to be true, but because the only alternative is special creation, which is clearly incredible’113 (emphasis added). The palaeontologist L. T. More, of the University of Chicago, has said much the same thing: ‘Our faith in the idea of evolution depends upon our reluctance to accept the antagonistic doctrine of special creation.’114 So has the eminent British anthropologist Sir Arthur Keith: ‘Evolution is unproved and unprovable. We believe it only because the alternative is special creation, which is unthinkable’115 (emphasis added).” (John Blanchard, Does God Believe In Atheists? 2383-2394 (Kindle Edition); Carlisle, PA; EP Books USA)

So, let’s make sure we understand this.

Evolutionists know the problems of the theory of evolution.

Evolutionists know the impossibilities of the theory of evolution.

Evolutionists know the absurdities of the theory of evolution.

Yet evolutionists continue to hold to this theory for one simple reason….because they DO NOT want to grant the possibility that GOD EXISTS.

Now, here is a question that I have.

Considering all of these facts, WHY is the theory of evolution allowed to be taught in public schools as TRUTH to children?

This last question should give us all opportunity to pause and consider.

Friends, the verdict is clear: there is a God. His Word (in nature and in Scripture) have been authenticated through in numerous infallible proofs.

Why not turn to Him today for salvation?

Through the death, burial, and resurrection of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, forgiveness for sins had been provided and intimate relationship with God is available (John 10:15-18; 17:).

God has declared that believers in Jesus (John 8:24) who repent of their sins (Luke 13:3) and are baptized into Him (Romans 6:3-4) Upon a profession of faith in Jesus as the Son of God (Acts 8:37; Romans 10:9-10) will be saved (Acts 2:38; 22:16) and added by God Himself to the church of Christ (Acts 2:47; Ephesians 1:3).

God also offers forgiveness to Christians who have turned away from Him. In repentance and prayer (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9), the erring child of God is restored to the Lord (Galatians 6:1; 1 John 2:1-2).

Why not obey Him today?

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Qualities Of A Godly Mother

By: Mark Tabata (Evangelist)

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” (Washington Irving, 1783 -1859)

I am convinced that one of the greatest blessings in the entire world is a godly mother.

Of course, there are others who share this sentiment, as evidenced by the holiday known as Mother’s Day.

In researching the history of when Mother’s Day became a national holiday, we find the following:

“A PROCLAMATION BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Whereas, By a Joint Resolution approved May 8, 1914, ” designating the second Sunday in May as Mothers’ Day, and for other purposes,”…Now, Therefore, I, Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the said Joint Resolution, do hereby direct the government officials to display the United States flag on all government buildings and do invite the people of the United States to display the flag at their homes or other suitable places on the second Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”

It is good that people have set aside a certain day to honor Mothers’ around the world, but in truth, godly mothers should be continually honored.

How people need to emulate the example of Solomon:

1 Kings 2:19-Bathsheba therefore went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her and bowed down to her, and sat down on his throne and had a throne set for the king’s mother; so she sat at his right hand.

In this article, I would like to consider with you an example of a godly and gracious mother.

The Gospel of Matthew tells us:

Matthew 15:21-28-21 Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

23 But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”

24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

26 But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”

27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

The Context Of The Passage

In the account of Matthew 15 (and Mark 7), Jesus has been engaged in public debate with the Pharisees.

These self-righteous traditionalists were always attacking Jesus and His followers. After entering into debate with the Pharisees, we read that Jesus leaves the general area and goes to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

Mark 7:24-From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden.

Now please consider: this was not just a stroll down the road!

Exiting the area of Gennesaret,(where Jesus had been healing the sick and afflicted-Matthew 14:34-36; Mark 6:53-56), Jesus teaches His disciples about the need to focus on keeping the heart pure (Matthew 15:16-20; Mark 7:18-19). Proceeding to Tyre and Sidon, and then back to the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 15:29; Mark 7:31), the Lord and His Apostles travelled between 60-100 miles on foot!

It is on this journey that we find this fascinating account of the Canaanite woman.

Wait…Does Jesus Call This Woman A DOG???

If you are like me, you are drawn to the words of Jesus calling this woman a “dog.”

How could Jesus call this woman a dog, when she is there trying to help her daughter?

Was He racist towards the Gentiles?

Actually, when we we study the Gospels, we see that Jesus had a high regard for Gentiles.

Michael Brown has well pointed out:

“To give you the bigger picture, here are some important things to know about Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel and the Savior of the whole world: • His disciple Matthew, in recording Yeshua’s ancestry through his adoptive father’s royal line, makes specific mention of two Gentile tile women who contributed to the royal line: Rahab, who was a Canaanite by birth, and Ruth, who was a Moabite by birth (Matt. 1:5). There was no genealogical need to mention either of these women, but he did so-in his very Jewish book!-for a specific theological reason (see also 1:3a). • In his first sermon in his hometown synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus drew attention to instances in the Tanakh in which God went out of his way to care for a Gentile widow and heal a Gentile general, thereby infuriating everyone in the synagogue (Luke 4:24-30). • After healing the servant of a Roman soldier, Yeshua said to those following him, “I say to you that many will come from the east and the west [meaning the Gentiles!], and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom [meaning the Jews who did not believe] will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matt. 8:11-12; see 8:5-13; note again that the very Jewish Matthew records these words). • In John 4, Jesus reached out to a Samaritan woman, despite the fact that the Samaritans were despised by other Jews as half-breeds, even staying in Samaria for two days to minister to the people there (John 4:42). • In the famous parable of the Good Samaritan, Yeshua made the hero of his parable a Samaritan, in contrast with a priest and a Levite, commending him as an example of a true neighbor (Luke 10:29-37). • Luke also records Jesus’ healing of ten lepers as they followed the Messiah’s instructions and made their way to the priest, noting that only one of the men returned to give him thanks-a Samaritan, whom the Lord then commended (Luke 17:11-19).” (Michael L. Brown, Answering Jewish Objections To Jesus: Volume Four-New Testament Objections, 170-172 (Kindle Edition); Grand Rapids, Michigan; Baker Books)

So, why did Jesus call this woman a dog?

First, we need to understand the word that is used in this passage.

Barclay points out:

“So Jesus at last turned to her: ‘It is not right to take the children’s bread and to throw it to the pet dogs.’ To call a person a dog was a deadly and a contemptuous insult. The Jews spoke with arrogant insolence about ‘Gentile dogs’, ‘infidel dogs’ and later ‘Christian dogs’. In those days, the dogs were the unclean scavengers of the street –lean, savage, often diseased. But there are two things to remember. The tone and the look with which a thing is said make all the difference. A thing which seems hard can be said with a disarming smile. We can call a friend ‘an old villain’ or ‘a rogue’, with a smile and a tone which take all the sting out of it and fill it with affection. We can be quite sure that the smile on Jesus’ face and the compassion in his eyes robbed the words of all insult and bitterness. Second, it is the diminutive word for dogs (kunaria) which is used, and the kunaria were not the street dogs, but the little household pets, very different from the stray dogs that roamed the streets and probed in the refuse heaps. The woman was a Greek; she was quick to see, and she had all a Greek’s ready wit. ‘True,’ she said, ‘but even the dogs get their share of the crumbs which fall from their master’s table.’ And Jesus’ eyes lit up with joy at such an indomitable faith; and he granted her the blessing and the healing which she so much desired.” (William Barclay, The New Daily Study Bible: The Gospel According To Matthew-Volume Two, 2359-2370 (Kindle Edition); Edinburgh, England; Saint Andrew Press)

The word that Jesus uses here is very important to consider. The Jewish people often looked upon the Gentiles as the ones that were in need of their guidance. The Gentiles were thus often viewed as people who needed the saving light of God which the Jewish people had been entrusted to provide.

God had given this Divine mission to the Hebrews:

“Centrifugal witnessing, it will be argued here, is the role assigned to Israel as it was to share actively with others the Man of Promise who was to come. This is why Paul quoted Isaiah 49:6 in his attempt to convince the Jews at Antioch Pisidia that it had been God’s intent all along to extend his blessings of redemption to the Gentiles (apart from any process of proselytism by which Gentiles converted to Judaism). And this will be my contention in this work as well. The source of world missionary activity is rooted in God’s call to the nation Israel in the Old Testament, which will then be the extended call to all who believe in all ages….Roger D. Aus suggested that the “offering of the Gentiles” in Romans 15:16 would fulfill what the prophet Isaiah saw (Isa. 66:19–23). [2] As a result of missionary activity, “all flesh” (Isa. 66:23), including Jews and Gentiles, would one day worship the Lord. They would come from as far away as Tarshish, that is, Spain (Isa. 66:19), [3] a site often linked with “from the ends of the earth” (Ps. 72:8–11; see also Jon. 1:3). The fact remains that the goal of the Old Testament was to see both Jews and Gentiles come to a saving knowledge of the Messiah who was to come. Anything less than this goal was a misunderstanding and an attenuation of the plan of God. God’s eternal plan was to provide salvation for all peoples; it was never intended to be reserved for one special group, such as the Jews, even as an initial offer! It is the history of this offer, and the way it was carried out in Old Testament times, that will form the heart of our study here.” (Walter C. Kaiser, Jr., Mission In The Old Testament: Israel As A Light To The Nations, 113-131 (Kindle Edition); Grand Rapids, Michigan; Baker Academic)

As such, Gentiles were not often considered wicked and vicious beasts, but rather untrained and ignorant persons who were in need of God’s Word to restore and make them whole.

Notice that the woman in the passage clearly understood these important facts:

“Second, the Greek word for “dog” is not the usual word for an unkempt street dog (Gk. kyōn), but a diminutive (Gk. kynarion), meaning a small dog that could be kept in the house as a pet. 14 In casting the word in the diminutive form Mark essentially empties it of opprobrium, for one feels entirely differently of a house pet than of an unclean street mongrel. The fact that the woman refers to her daughter and herself with the same term in her reply to Jesus shows that she does not take kynarion in a hostile or contemptuous sense. Third, “dog” signifies a traditional distinction between the Jews and the Gentiles that is important to the story. In the thought-world of the day, the Jews considered themselves “children” of God (Exod 4: 22; Deut 14: 1; Isa 1: 2). They differed from other nations because of their inclusion in the covenant of Abraham (Genesis 17) and because they possessed the Torah (Exodus 19). The issue at stake between Jesus and the woman is whether Jesus is sent to “the children” or “to the dogs.” The woman maintains the same distinction between “children” and “dogs” in her reply to Jesus, though with one slight change. Whereas Jesus refers to Israel as teknōn (” biological children”), the woman refers to Israel as paidiōn, which is more inclusive, implying both children and servants in a household. The change in terminology suggests that the woman understands the mercies of God to extend beyond ethnic Israel. The basic issue in the repartee between Jesus and the woman is not whether Gentiles have a claim on God’s mercies, but the relation of that claim to the Jewish claim. Jesus does not deny the woman’s request. “First let the children eat all they want” simply establishes a priority of mission; it does not exclude other hungry mouths. In the present context it implies the messianic priority of Jesus’ ministry to Israel to his ministry to the Gentiles, particularly, as we suggested earlier, with regard to teaching about the kingdom of God. But the priority of Israel in Jesus’ mission does not imply the exclusion of the Gentiles. The Servant of the Lord must first “restore the tribes of Jacob,” and then be “a light to the nations” (Isa 49: 6; also 42: 1; 61: 1-11). The choice of kynarion implies the dogs are house pets; that is, they belong to the household and will be fed along with the children. Indeed, the analogy of the children and dogs suggests a relationship to Jesus himself, for who might be the “father” who feeds the children —and their dogs —if not Jesus? The woman’s reply to Jesus in v. 28 shows her understanding and acceptance of Israel’s privilege. 15 Indeed, she appears to understand the purpose of Israel’s Messiah better than Israel does. Her pluck and persistence are a testimony to her trust in the sufficiency and surplus of Jesus: his provision for the disciples and Israel will be abundant enough to provide for one such as herself. Mark provides a clue to this understanding in the Gk. chortazō (NIV, “eat all they want”). This word occurs only twice elsewhere in Mark, in the feedings of the five thousand (6: 42) and four thousand (8: 4, 8). In its present location, the word bridges Jesus’ feeding of the Jews (6: 31-44) and his subsequent feeding of the Gentiles (8: 1-10). When dogs eat crumbs from the table they do not rob children of their food; they simply eat what is theirs from the surplus of the children.” (James R. Edwards, The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel According To Mark, 4179-4205 (Kindle Edition); Grand Rapids, Michigan; William B. Eerdmans’ Publishing Company)

So, Jesus was not insulting this woman; instead, He was acknowledging the fact that His first and primary mission was to the nation of Israel.

Included within His answer, however, is the affirmation that His mission would also include saving the Gentiles (and the woman’s answer demonstrates that she also understood this).

The Apostles clearly begin to understand this, for they ask Jesus to grant her request and to send her back to her home (Matthew 15:23).

In this passage, we see Jesus teaching His disciples some very important lessons. They are able to see the importance of compassion and persistence.

Consider how this would be contrasted with the unbending and self-righteous Pharisees, who often looked upon Gentiles with disgust and contempt.

The Lord, understanding that He had been sent to truly call all the nations to repentance, first had need to reach out to the descendants of Abraham; and here, He teaches these important lessons to HIs followers by testing the faith and persistence of the Canaanite woman.

With these things in mind, please notice some important qualities of a godly mother with me from this woman.

A Godly Mother Will Seek Jesus First

The passage makes it clear that this woman understands Who Jesus is. Please observe several things which show that this woman understood Who Jesus is.

First, look at how she refers to Jesus:

Matthew 15:22-And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

She clearly understood that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of David. This indicates that perhaps she had heard of the promised Messiah from the Jewish Scriptures.

Indeed, there were several people in the ancient world who were seeking the Savior from Israel.

John 12:20-21-20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast.

21 Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

In the first century, there were many Gentiles who were known as “God-Fearers,” people who (although not official converts to Judaism) looked to the Hebrew Messiah for their hope.

“In addition to proselytes, there were many Gentile “God Fearers” who gravitated to the synagogue; accepting at least some forms and ceremonies of Judaism. It is possible that the name of these partial converts originated from the Tanakhi phrase “those who fear the LORD.”[ 36] A homily on Isaiah 44.5 identifies the four classes mentioned in the verse as children of wicked Israelites, penitents, righteous converts and “fearers of heaven.”[ 37] Naaman is described as such, as he was not by any stretch of the imagination a resident alien, but a foreigner who accepted Jewish monotheism; a “fearer of heaven” (yirei shamayim). In Josephus and Philo, the Christian Testament, the inscriptions to which we will soon look and elsewhere, we learn of this category who had not formally entered the Jewish fold, who nevertheless depended on Judaism for their spiritual direction.[ 38] Contrary to the aforementioned preconceptions, it would appear that it was quite easy to enter Judaism by both pagans and later by Christians.[ 39] Contrary to the aforementioned preconceptions, it is entirely likely that this was a name imposed upon the God Fearers, not a personal ascription….These partial adherents, described in Acts as well as Josephus in the first century CE, were distinguished from proselytes and yet they were publicly associated with Judaism[ 40] without yet being regarded as Jews.[ 41] Josephus recorded the existence in Antioch of Gentiles who were “in some way” attached to the local Jewish community.[ 42] They appear to have been welcomed by the Jewish leaders. A distinction was thus made between the idolatrous Gentile and the Gentile who feared God.[ 43]” (Micah Ben David Naziri, The Significance Of The God-Fearers In The Environment Of Early Christianity-Gentile Sympathizers Of Of Judaism And The Success Of The Paulean Meme239-282 (Kindle Edition); New Dawn Publications)

Further, notice that this woman worships Jesus:

Matthew 15:25-Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

Godly mothers are entrusted (along with godly fathers) with the Divine commission to teach the Word of God to children:

Proverbs 1:8-My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother;

Proverbs 6:20-My son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother.

Several times, the Psalmist talks about how his mother had always been a servant of Jehovah:

Psalm 86:16-Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me! Give Your strength to Your servant, And save the son of Your maidservant.

Psalm 116:16-O LORD, truly I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant; You have loosed my bonds.

We are reminded that Timothy was taught the Word of God by his godly mother:

2 Timothy 1:5-when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.

2 Timothy 3:15-and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

The powerful influence of a godly mother can stay with children throughout all their lives:

“I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.” (Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

“We search the world for truth; we cull The good, the pure, the beautiful, From all old flower fields of the soul; And, weary seeker of the best, We come back laden from out quest, To find that all the sages said Is in the Book our mothers read.” (John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807 -1892)

A Godly Mother Will Put The Needs Of Her Family Above Her Own

Notice that this godly woman is willing to put the needs of her family above her own.

Is this not what godly mothers have done throughout time?

Godly mothers throughout Scripture have always been a portrait of love. Even in their imperfections, the example of motherly love is often set forth as an example for God’s people to emulate. Indeed, God often pictures Himself as a Mother Who will care for her children in the midst of their trails and afflictions:

Isaiah 66:12-13-12 For thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, And the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Then you shall feed; On her sides shall you be carried, And be dandled on her knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

Consider some examples of godly mothers in the Bible and what they did for their children:

Eve (Genesis 3-4). Even though Eve helped to introduce sin into the world, we are reminded of the fact that she eventually saw her need to put God first and come back to Him.

“Whatever Eve may have meant by that expression in Genesis 4:1, it was nonetheless a clear expression of hope and rejoicing because of God’s grace, compassion, kindness, and forgiveness toward her. There’s a tone of exultation in it: “I have acquired a man from the LORD.” It is also clear that her hope was personified in her own children. She saw them as tokens of God’s goodness and reminders of the promise that her seed would be the instrument by which the tempter’s ultimate destruction was accomplished….Were Adam and Eve saved? I believe they were. God’s grace to them is exemplified in the way He “made tunics of skin, and clothed them” (Gen. 3:21 NKJV). In order for Him to do that, some animals had to be slain. Thus the first ever blood sacrifice was made by the hand of God on their behalf. Furthermore, concealed in God’s declaration that the woman’s Seed would defeat the serpent was an implicit promise that their sin and all its consequences would one day be vanquished and the guilt of it would be eradicated. We know from a New Testament perspective that this promise involved the sending of God’s own Son to undo what Adam’s sin did. They believed that promise, insofar as they understood it. Scripture records that Seth founded a line of godly people: “As for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the LORD” (Gen. 4:26 NKJV). Where would their knowledge of the Lord have come from? Obviously, it came from Adam and Eve, who had more direct and firsthand knowledge of God than anyone else since the fall. This godly line (which endures in the faith of millions even today) was to a large degree their legacy. Happily for Eve, it will eventually prove to be an infinitely more enduring legacy than her sin. After all, heaven will be filled with her redeemed offspring, and they will be eternally occupied with a celebration of the work of her Seed.” (John MacArthur, Twelve Extraordinary Women: How God Shaped Women of The Bible, And What He Wants To Do With You, 24-25 (Kindle Edition); Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson)

Sarah (Genesis 21). Even though Sarah was an imperfect sinner, she showed great love for her son Isaac.

Hannah (1 Samuel 1-3). Hannah desperately wanted a child. When God granted her heart’s prayer, she dedicated him to the Lord and provided for him every way she could.

Elizabeth (Luke 1). The godly mother of John the Baptist was a woman of faith, strength, prayer, and courage.

Mary (Luke 1:26-38; 2:1-20, 25-35; John 19:25-27). Even though Mary was destined to be the Mother of the Messiah, she would face heartbreak and trial. She would suffer terribly; yet she was the mother that raised Jesus and provided for Him.

There are so many other examples of godly mothers in the Bible who loved their children and provided for them with whatever they had.

How blessed we are to have godly mothers who sacrifice for their children!

A Godly Mother Will Understand The Need For Good And Productive Instruction And Discipline

Finally, the Canaanite woman teaches us about the fact that godly mothers will understand the need for instruction and discipline.

The word that Jesus uses here to refer to the Canaanite (“dog”) was understood as the beloved pet that needed instruction and discipline.

The woman, understanding this, was not offended; for she was one of those who looked to the God of Israel to bring forth the Messiah.

Godly mothers understand the need to instruct and discipline children.

Proverbs 13:24-He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

Proverbs 19:18-Chasten your son while there is hope, And do not set your heart on his destruction.

Proverbs 22:15-Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

Proverbs 23:13-Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.

Godly mothers and fathers understand the need for instructive discipline.

Having learned some of these qualities of a godly mother, I want to bring this article to a conclusion with the following tribute to mothers. I am not entirely sure who wrote these words, but they are powerful and speak so strongly to godly motheers of all ages.

Tribute To Mothers

The young mother set her foot in the path of life. “Is the way long?” she asked. And her guide said, “Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning.” But the young mother was happy and she would not believe that anything could be better than those years. So, she played with her children, she gathered flowers for them in the way, and bathed them in clear streams; and the sun shone on them and life was good, and the young mother said, “Nothing will be lovelier than this.” The night came, and the storm; the path was dark, and the children shook with fear and cold; and Mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said, “Oh, Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near and no harm can come.” The mother said, “This is better than the brightness of the day, for I have taught them courage.”

And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary, but at times she said to the children, “A little patience and we are there.” So the children climbed and when they reached the top, they said, “We could not have done it without you, Mother,” and the mother, when she lay down that night said, “This is better than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage– today I gave them strength.

And the next day came strange clouds– clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped and stumbled; and the mother said, “Look up. Lift up your eyes to the light.” And the children looked and saw above the clouds an Everlasting glory, and it guided them and brought them beyond the darkness. “This is the best of all,” she said, “for I have shown my children–God.”

And the days went on, and the years– and Mother grew old and bent. But her children were strong and walked with courage. And when the way was hard, they helped their mother; and when she was very rough, they lifted her, for she was light as a feather. At last they came to a hill beyond which they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. The mother said, “I have reached the end of the journey and I know the first, for my children will walk alone. The children said, “You will walk with us.” And they watched her go alone and the gates closed after her. It was said, “We cannot see her, but she is still with us. A mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence.”

The Son of God came forth from a godly woman, and offers salvation to all (1 Timothy 2:15; 2 Corinthians 5:15). Dying for the sins of mankind (1 Timothy 2:4), Jesus was buried and arose from the grave on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

Why not today, as a believer, repent of your sins and be baptized into Christ to have your sins washed away by the blood of the Lamb (Acts 2:38; 22:16)?

If you are an erring child of God who has left the Lord, why not return to Him today in repentance and prayer (Acts 8:22; Revelation 3:20)?

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Overview Of The Book Of Jasher

By: Mark Tabata (Evangelist)

Several times in the Bible, there are references made to a work known as the book of Jasher. However, this book is not found in the 66 Books of the Bible. In this article, I would like to share with you some of the facts regarding this interesting book, and notice some of its’ many valuable gems for the devout student of the Bible.

The History Of The Book Of Jasher

The word “Jasher” is a word that simply means upright. The actual recipient of the book, as well as its’ author, is unknown.

What is known is that the book itself has a very interesting history.

Ken Johnson, in describing the history of Jasher, points out that there have been some forgeries throughout the years, and that the book of Jasher we have today enjoys a vast amount of textual evidence and ancient authentication.

Johnson writes:

“The book of Jasher is one of 13 ancient history books that are recommended reading by the Bible….If we are to believe the text itself, this history book was written over 3,500 years ago. It is approximately the same age as the biblical book of Genesis. It covers about the same time period as Genesis and Exodus but has about twice as much information in it than Genesis. It answers a lot of questions raised in Genesis….There have been at least two forgeries. One is an ethical treatise from the Middle Ages and does not exist in English currently, as far as I know. It is somewhat Gnostic in style beginning with a section on the mystery of creation. A second forgery was published in AD 1829, supposedly translated by Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus. These two are nowhere near the caliber of this book of Jasher and both are missing the information that Scripture tells us is in the real book of Jasher. This is the only Jasher that corresponds to what Scripture says it contains. Much of the extra information contained in Jasher can also be found in the Babylonian Talmud, the Mishna, and Ginzberg’s Legends of the Jews. There are numerous quotes showing Rabbi Eliazar used this book of Jasher extensively in the first century AD. The Mishna was completed about AD 200, and the Talmud about AD 800. We can know for a fact that the Mishna and Talmud used this book of Jasher as a source document and not the other way around. Also, since the Ancient Seder Olam was written in about AD 169 and references Jasher, we know the book of Jasher was used by other historians in the second century AD.” (Ken Johnson, Th.D, The Book Of Jasher: A New Annotated Edition, 6 (Kindle Edition); Biblefacts Ministries;

Should The Book Of Jasher Be In The Bible?

There are several reasons why this book was not included in the canon of Scripture.

First, whenever Prophets of God wrote Scripture, they were required by God to make it known publicly to the people.

For example:

Exodus 25:16-And you shall put into the ark the Testimony which I will give you.
Deuteronomy 10:2-And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke; and you shall put them in the ark.’

Deuteronomy 10:5-Then I turned and came down from the mountain, and put the tablets in the ark which I had made; and there they are, just as the LORD commanded me.”

Deuteronomy 31:24-26-24 So it was, when Moses had completed writing the words of this law in a book, when they were finished, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying: 26 “Take this Book of the Law, and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there as a witness against you;

Joshua 24:26-Then Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And he took a large stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

1 Samuel 10:25-Then Samuel explained to the people the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

The account of Jeremiah in this regard is especially interesting.

The Lord had commissioned the Prophet Jeremiah to write down and preaching the Word against the wicked rulers in Jerusalem. Having been thrown in prison, Jeremiah commissioned his scribe Baruch to go and preach the Word to the people.

We read:

Jeremiah 36:1-8-1 Now it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying: 2 “Take a scroll of a book and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day. 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the adversities which I purpose to bring upon them, that everyone may turn from his evil way, that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.” 4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote on a scroll of a book, at the instruction of Jeremiah, all the words of the LORD which He had spoken to him. 5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am confined, I cannot go into the house of the LORD. 6 You go, therefore, and read from the scroll which you have written at my instruction, the words of the LORD, in the hearing of the people in the LORD’s house on the day of fasting. And you shall also read them in the hearing of all Judah who come from their cities. 7 It may be that they will present their supplication before the LORD, and everyone will turn from his evil way. For great is the anger and the fury that the LORD has pronounced against this people.” 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the book the words of the LORD in the LORD’s house.
The text shows us that Jeremiah as commissioned to write down the Word of God and deliver it to the people.

Later, when the wicked king Jehoiakim heard the Word of God, he did the following:

Jeremiah 36;23-And it happened, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that the king cut it with the scribe’s knife and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.

Despite this, we are told:

Jeremiah 36:27-28-27 Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words which Baruch had written at the instruction of Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying: 28 “Take yet another scroll, and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.

Jeremiah 36:32-Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the instruction of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And besides, there were added to them many similar words.

The Prophets of God were always required to give His Word to the people:

Isaiah 8:1-Moreover the LORD said to me, “Take a large scroll, and write on it with a man’s pen concerning Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.

Habakkuk 2:2-Then the LORD answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.

There is no evidence that the book of Jasher was written as inspired Scripture; indeed, if it were such, it would have been delivered by the Prophets as the Word of God.

Second, once the Word of the Prophets had been Divinely confirmed by God, the people of God received these Books into the canon of Scripture.

For example:

1 Kings 8:9-Nothing was in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.d

2 Kings 22:8-Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.Thus

2 Chronicles 5:10-Nothing was in the ark except the two tablets which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they had come out of Egypt.

Daniel 9:2-in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

Thus far, we see that the people of God accepted confirmed Prophetic Books into the canon of Scripture.

As such, if Jasher was inspired Scripture, the people of God would have quickly added it into the collection of inspired Books.

Therefore, we see that Jasher is not inspired Scripture.

What Then Shall We Do With The Book Of Jasher?

Even though Jasher is not inspired Scripture, the inspired Scriptures refer to this book!

For example:

Joshua 10:13-So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.

The book of Jasher does record this event:

Jasher 88:63-64-“…and Joshua said in the sight of all the people, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon, and thou moon in the valley of Ajalon, until the nation shall have revenged itself upon its enemies… And the sun stood still in the midst of the heavens, and it stood still six and thirty moments, and the moon also stood still and hastened not to go down a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened to the voice of man, for the Lord fought for Israel.”

Again, we are told in 2 Samuel:

2 Samuel 1:18-and he told them to teach the children of Judah the Song of the Bow; indeed it is written in the Book of Jasher:

Jasher records:

Jasher 56:9-“…only teach thy sons the use of the bow and all weapons of war, in order that they may fight the battles of their brother who will rule over his enemies.”

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul prophesies that during the Christian Age, many people will grow worse and worse.

In this context, he writes:

2 Timothy 3:8-Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith;

We will search the Old Testament in vain trying to find Jannes and Jambres.

However, the book of Jasher educates us as to the identity of these two individuals:

Jasher 79:27, 36-“And when they had gone Pharaoh sent for Balaam the magician and to Jannes and Jambres his sons, and to all the magicians and conjurors and counsellors which belonged to the king, and they all came and sat before the king… And Aaron hastened and threw the rod out of his hand before Pharaoh and before his servants, and the rod turned into a serpent.”

So, even though Jasher was not considered inspired Scripture, it is clear that the inspired Scriptures encourage people to study the book of Jasher!

With that in mind, notice some interesting tidbits that the book of Jasher provides us when we study it hand in hand with the Bible.

Insight Into The Sin Of Cain

The Bible records for us that the worship of Cain was rejected by God, while the worship of his brother Abel was accepted (Genesis 4:1-5).

While there may be additional reasons why the worship of Cain was rejected by God, the book of Jasher provides us some very interesting insights:

Jasher 1:15-16-15 And it was at the expiration of a few years, that they brought an approximating offering to the Lord, and Cain brought from the fruit of the ground, and Abel brought from the firstlings of his flock from the fat thereof, and God turned and inclined to Abel and his offering, and a fire came down from the Lord from heaven and consumed it. 16 And unto Cain and his offering the Lord did not turn, and he did not incline to it, for he had brought from the inferior fruit of the ground before the Lord, and Cain was jealous against his brother Abel on account of this, and he sought a pretext to slay him.

One reason why God rejected the worship of Cain was because Cain did not give God his best in worship.

Has that not always been a failing of mankind?

The Prophet Malachi declared:

Malachi 1:8-And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice, Is it not evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, Is it not evil? Offer it then to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you favorably?” Says the LORD of hosts.

The Law of Moses had commanded that worshippers offer their best to the Lord (Leviticus 22:19-25; Deuteronomy 15:21).

Shall we not today learn the same lesson, and approach our worship to the Lord in the spirit of reverence and godly fear (Hebrews 12:28)?

The Genetic Experiments Of The Fallen Angels And Wicked Mankind

The Bible records that some of the fallen angels interacted with humans and corrupted them in several ways. We are specifically told that the sons of God had children with humans, and that these half-angel and half-human creatures were called “nephilim” (i.e., giants-see Genesis 6:1-4).

Furthermore, according to the book of Jasher the fallen angels and nephilim were practicing horrible genetic experiments before the Flood:

Jasher 4:18-18 And their judges and rulers went to the daughters of men and took their wives by force from their husbands according to their choice, and the sons of men in those days took from the cattle of the earth, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and taught the mixture of animals of one species with the other, in order therewith to provoke the Lord; and God saw the whole earth and it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its ways upon earth, all men and all animals.

The book of Enoch (another uninspired “recommended reading” book by the Bible) records the same:

Enoch 7:5-6-5 T hey also began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another’s flesh, and drink the blood. 6 Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.

It is interesting to notice that the ancient book of Enoch (well-known to the Apostles of Christ, as a future study will document) uses the phrase “lawless ones” to refer to the fallen angels and nephilim. This may shed interesting light on Paul’s teaching of the “man of sin” in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12.

Death Used As A Deliverance For God’s People

In the book of Jasher, we are told that God was allowing the righteous to die so that they would not see the terrible devastation that the Flood would bring:

Jasher 4:20-20 And all men who walked in the ways of the Lord, died in those days, before the Lord brought the evil upon man which he had declared, for this was from the Lord, that they should not see the evil which the Lord spoke of concerning the sons of men.

Jasher 5:5-And all who followed the Lord died in those days, before they saw the evil which God declared to do upon earth.

Jasher 5:21-And all the sons of men who knew the Lord, died in that year before the Lord brought evil upon them; for the Lord willed them to die, so as not to behold the evil that God would bring upon their brothers and relatives, as he had so declared to do.

The Prophet Isaiah echoed this sentiment when He declared that through death, God was delivering the righteous from evil to come:

Isaiah 57:1-2 (NLT)-1 Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come. 2 For those who follow godly paths will rest in peace when they die.

Speaking of the original language of this passage, one scholar has written:

“But behind all the malignity a purpose is at work which no- one ponders … understands. Devout men : literally ‘men of unfailing love’, those whom the Lord loves with a never- failing love. Taken away … taken away : the first is plural, the second singular; the general truth followed by the particular case. It is always the same: the death of the righteous (those right with God) is never simply the inevitable end that comes to all, neither is it ever accidental or untimely, but always purposeful, deliberate, a ‘taking away’ in order to be spared from evil (1 Cor. 10:13; 2 Kgs 22:20) and brought into peace and rest. As they lie in death : literally ‘they lie upon their beds’, an entering into comfort. Walk uprightly is the last phrase in the MT , just as the righteous is the first; those who are ‘right with God’ display an upright life as others watch them.” (J. Alec Mottyer, Isaiah: Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries, 6849-6855 (Kindle Edition); Nottingham, England; Intervarsity Press)

Even the great enemy of death is used by God to bring blessing to His people. How powerfully the book of Jasher illustrates this!

Young Animals Brought To The Ark

Students of the Bible have long wondered how representatives of all of the animals on Earth were able to fit on the Ark (Genesis 6:19-20; 7:1-3).

The book of Jasher provides an interesting perspective that may provide a partial answer to this question:

Jasher 6:3-5-3 And the Lord brought this about on the next day, and animals, beasts and fowls came in great multitudes and surrounded the ark. 4 And Noah went and seated himself by the door of the ark, and of all flesh that crouched before him, he brought into the ark, and all that stood before him he left upon earth. 5 And a lioness came, with her two whelps, male and female, and the three crouched before Noah, and the two whelps rose up against the lioness and smote her, and made her flee from her place, and she went away, and they returned to their places, and crouched upon the earth before Noah.

Notice that according to Jasher, it was primarily the young of the species that God brought to the Ark.
Of course, this makes sense on several counts.

First, the young would be typically very small and would not require as much living area as a full-grown animal.

Second, a younger animal would mean less waste to excrete and manage.

Third, young animals would require less food and supervision.

Fourth, young animals would ensure that a larger percentage would be hibernating during the long voyage.

Fifth, with younger creatures, there would be less chance of hostile interaction between species.

Finally, the younger the animals on the Ark, the better chance of survival after the Flood.

There is, indeed, much more that could be said about this incredible book.

In many ways, the book of Jasher is a great aid in better understanding the Word of God; and its’ value is made clear by the fact that Holy Write itself encourages people to study from it!

One of the great lessons from the book of Jasher is the horrible and wretched condition of mankind that has arisen as a result of sin. It is because of sin that suffering and death entered into the Creation (Genesis 2:15-17; 3:17-19).

Yet in the midst of one of the darkest hours of humanity, God promises to one Day send a Savior to the world who would conquer the devil and bring redemption to Adam’s race (Genesis 3;15). This Savior was prophesied about throughout the Patriarchal and Mosaic Ages, and the Son of God Himself was eventually brought into the world of sinful man:

Acts 10:43-To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.”

The Son of God came and fulfilled the Law’s requirements, becoming the perfect Sacrifice for the sins of mankind:

Luke 24:44-47-44 Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” 45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. 46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

By His death, burial, and resurrection on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-8), Jesus has defeated the powers of darkness (Colossians 2:15) so that all believers who repent of their sins and are baptized into Him will receive the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 2:11-13).

Why not obey His call today?

If you are a child of God who has left the Lord, will you not today repent of your sins and confess them to Him in prayer? He promises sweet forgiveness to His erring children who return to Him (1 John 1:8-2:2).

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

The Magog War: Part Two-The Nations Of The War

By: Mark Tabata (Evangelist)

Throughout Ezekiel 38 and 39, we are told about a war that a will take place some time during the Christian Age.

In this war, the enemies of God will attack “Israel” and (by all appearances) will destroy God’s people.

However, He intervenes and the enemies of God are defeated.

In this article, we are going to notice the identities of the specific nations which are mentioned in this passage (saving the identity of “Israel” for last).

The Hostile Nations

We are told about several nations that attack Israel.

Let’s notice the list of nations here recorded, and see who their descendants are today.

The first nation mentioned in this list is that of Magog. (Notice: Gog is said to be a powerful leader who comes from the land of Magog).

Magog is first mentioned back in the Book of Genesis, in what is known as the Table of Nations (Genesis 10).

Let me point out that while many people mock the list of nations recorded in Genesis 10, those who have set themselves to study the authenticity of this record have been amazed at its’ accuracy.

For example, one inquisitive investigator named Bill Cooper records:

“When I first came across this problem some fifty years ago, I found it most perplexing. On the one hand I had the Bible itself claiming to be the very Word of God, and on the other I was presented with numerous commentaries that spoke with one voice in telling me that the Bible was nothing of the kind. It was merely a hotch- potch collection of Middle- Eastern myths and fables that sought to explain the world in primitive terms, whose parts had been patched together by a series of later editors. Modem scientific man need have nothing whatever to do with it. Now, it simply was not possible for both these claims to be valid. Only one of them could be right, and I saw it as my duty, to myself at least, to find out which was the true account and which was the false….Either way, I would discover once and for all whether the Biblical record was worthy of my trust or not. It seemed a little irreverent to treat a book that claimed to be the very Word of God in such a fashion. But if truth has any substance at all, then that Book would surely be able to bear such a test. If Genesis contained any falsehood, error or misleading statement of fact, then a severe testing would reveal it and I would be the first to add my own voice to those of all the other scholars who declared the Book of Genesis to be little more than fable…What I had not expected at the time was the fact that the task was to engage my attention and energies for more than twenty- five years. Nor had I expected the astonishing degree to which Genesis, particularly the tenth and eleventh chapters, was to be vindicated. These chapters are conveniently known to scholars as the Table of Nations, and the sheer breadth and depth of the historical evidence that was available for their study astonished me….Today I can say that the names so far vindicated in the Table of Nations make up over 99% of the list, and I shall make no further comment on that other than to say that no other ancient historical document of purely human authorship could be expected to yield such a level of corroboration as that!” (Bill Cooper, After The Flood: The Early Post-Flood History Of Europe Traced Back To Noah, 80-111 (emphasis added, M.T.), (Kindle Edition))

Genesis 10 recorded the descendants of the nations from Ham, Shem, and Japheth (the sons of Noah) after the Flood, and after the Tower of Babel incident.

We first find Magog being mentioned in this passage:

Genesis 10:1-2-1 Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

We are told in several ancient Hebrew history books that the descendants of Magog settled in the land of Scythia.

For example:

“Magog founded those that from him were named Magogites, but who are by the Greeks called Scythians. ” (Josephus, Antiquities Of The Jews,. 1.6.1)

The ancient book of Jasher (which is not inspired Scripture but is highly recommended for study by the Scriptures-Joshua 10:13; 2 Timothy 3:8), records that some of the descendants of Magog settled in other parts of Scythia:

Book Of Jasher 10:14-14 And the children of Meshech are the Shibashni and the children of Tiras are Rushash, Cushni, and Ongolis; all these went and built themselves cities; those are the cities that are situate by the sea Jabus by the river Cura, which empties itself in the river Tragan.

Another Jewish history book records:

Book Of Jubilees 9:9-Magog (dwells in)_ all the inner portions of the north until it reaches to the sea of Me’at.”

Finally, it would be well to note that the Irish historian Geoffrey of Monmouth (in Historian Regum Britanniae) reported that Magog crowned his firstborn son, Boath, as the first king of Scythia.

Now, all of these historians point out that Magog settled in the land of Scythia.

What land is that in our day and age?

In fact, it is noteworthy that in the reference from Jasher (mentioned above), the descendants of Magog are said to settle near the river Tragan. This was an ancient name for the river known today as the Volga River.

Interestingly enough, there is a famous city that exists there to this day:

It also needs to be pointed out however that Magog and his descendants actually are the ancestors of other nations.

“There later follows a succession of strange and ancient names, of which the table of descent that opens this chapter is a somewhat simplified extract. The important thing for us to notice in this table of descent, though, is the unequivocal statement that the decidedly pagan Irish traced their origins back to the Biblical patriarch, Magog, the son of Japheth. This is in direct contrast to the claims of the Britons and other European nations, whose genealogies were traced back to Javan, another son of Japheth. Now, Magog, as we shall see in Appendix 3, was considered, with Ashchenaz, the father of the Scythian peoples, and the early Irish chroniclers were most emphatic in their insistence that the Irish were of Scythian stock. And there is good etymological evidence for this. The Irish were long referred to as Scots even before some of them migrated to the country that today bears their name, and as Brewer tells us: “Scot (is) the same as Scythian in etymology; the root of both is Sct. The Greeks had no c, and would change t into th making the root skth, and by adding a phonetic vowel we get Skuthai (Scythians), and Skodiai (Skoths). The Welsh disliked s at the beginning of a word, and would change it to ys; they would also change c or k to g, and th to d; whence the Welsh root would be Ysgd, and Skuth or Skoth would become ysgod. Once more, the Saxons would cut off the Welsh y, and change the g back again to c, and the d to t, converting the Ysgod to Scot.” 9 It would be no strange thing to find Scythian peoples as far west as Ireland. After all, the land in Asia Minor known of old as Galatia, was populated by a migrating colony of Gallic Celts (the Gauls) from whom the country got its name. St Paul wrote his famous epistle to their descendants. Many other examples from history are known of nations seemingly popping up in places where one would normally not expect to find them, so it requires no great stretch of the imagination to accept what the early Irish chroniclers so often insisted upon, namely their descent from the Scythian races.” (Bill Cooper, After The Flood: The Early Post-Flood History Of Europe Traced Back To Noah, 1473-1482 (Kindle Edition))

The descendants of Magog included the peoples of Russia and Ireland.
The Connection To Rome

There is another important fact that needs to be pointed out about Magog.

Despite the evidence listed above, some scholars have pointed out that the connection with Magog to Russia is not accurate.

Instead, it is pointed out that in Ezekiel’s day, there was a nation that was known as Magog!

“In his multi-volume work called The Natural History, Pliny identifies the ancient Lydian city of Hierapolis as being part of Magog. Built atop the cliffs, the city of Hierapolis controlled the water supply of the Lydian city of Laodicea six miles to the south. The city of Hierapolis was built by the Lydians and always under Lydian control until the Lydian Kingdom became part of the Persian Empire in 546 BC and then part of the Greek and Roman Empires that followed. Like Pliny, today’s archeologists also identify Magog with the ancient nation of Lydia, which was in western Asia Minor. Indeed, written records from the Assyrian royal court show that the Assyrians used the name Magog as an eponym for the nation of Lydia. In his book Pliny writes, “Bambyx the other name of which is Hierapolis, but by the Syrians called Magog.”* In other words, Pliny identifies the famed Lydian city of Hierapolis as being part of Magog. In this we see that Magog is another name for the ancient nation of Lydia….The identification of Magog with Lydia and not Scythia is consistent with the ancient texts of the Assyrians, who at various times were either the allies or the foes of the Scythians yet had peaceful dealings with the Lydians. The identification of Magog as Lydian, and not Scythian is also consistent with the writings of the ancient historian Herodotus (ca 490-424 BC), a Greek who was born in, lived in, and traveled throughout all of ancient Asia Minor. Herodotus’ famed book, The History, which gives a detailed history of all the ancient nations of Asia Minor, was written about 100 years after Ezekiel’s writings. 14 Herodotus, who is considered the Father of History, wrote detailed information about the three different Scythian tribes and the ten different tribes that neighbored them, including their ever changing and opportunistic alliances….He says that Magog (Lydia), as led by the historical figure Gog (Gyges to the Greek, Gugu to the Assyrians) and the Scythians, were in fact enemies! In Gyges of Lydia we have the leader the Assyrians called “Gugu, King of Ludu,” and “Gugu of Magugu,” the Bible’s Gog of Magog. 15” (Jeffrey Goodman, Ph.D., The Comets Of God: New Scientific Evidence For God-Recent Archaeological, Geological, And Astronomical Discoveries That Shine New Light On The Bible And Its’ Prophecies, 473-476 (Kindle Edition); Tucson, ARIZONA; Archaeological Research Books L.L.C.).

Now, here is the fascinating thing about Magog (Lydia): it was one of the leading nations that eventually formed the Roman Empire.

Throughout several Old Testament prophecies, the nation of Rome is seen to be the archenemy of God’s people.

In fact, the wickedness that began through pagan Rome worked its’ way down through papal Rome, trying in every way to destroy the church of Christ (Daniel 2:36-44; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12).

In regards to the identification of Magog, I personally believe that both of these interpretations (connecting Magog with Russia and Rome) have some elements of truth in them.

It seems undeniable that there is a connection between Russia and Magog; but it also seems undeniable that there is a connection between Magog and Rome.

The next interesting nation that is mentioned here is found in verse 2.

Ezekiel 38:2-“Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

In verse two, we are told about the prince of “Rosh.”

Now, it is very likely that your Bible translation will not use this word. Notice how this passage is translated in different translations:

Ezekiel 38:2 (KJV)-Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

Ezekiel 38:2 (ASV)-Son of man, set thy face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him,

Some of the translations use the word “Rosh,” while others simply translate this as “chief prince.”

There is confusion about exactly how to translate this word.

You see, it could be a word that simply means “the ruler.”

Or, it could be a personal noun.
Some investigators have pointed out that this was possibly an ancient designation for the nation of Russia.

Let’s notice some of the interesting facts regarding this issue:

“Bible scholars have often identified Rosh with Russia. But this conclusion has not been unanimous. Two key questions must be answered to properly identify Rosh: (1) Is Rosh a common noun or a proper name? and (2) Does Rosh have any relation to Russia? The word rosh in Hebrew simply means “head, top, summit, or chief.” It is a very common word used in all Semitic languages. Most Bible translations translate rosh as a common noun—“ chief.” The King James Version, Revised Standard Version, English Standard Version, New American Bible, New Living Translation, and New International Version all adopt this translation. However, the Jerusalem Bible, New English Bible, and New American Standard Bible all translate Rosh as a proper name indicating a geographical location. The weight of evidence favors translating Rosh in Ezekiel 38–39 as a proper name. Five arguments support this view. First, the eminent Hebrew scholars C. F. Keil and Wilhelm Gesenius both hold that a proper noun is the better translation of Rosh in Ezekiel 38: 2-3 and 39: 1, referring to a specific geographical location. 214 Second, the Greek translation of the Old Testament, the Septuagint, translates Rosh as the proper name Ros. This translation is especially significant since the Septuagint was translated only three centuries after Ezekiel was written—obviously much closer to the original than any modern translation. The modern translations of Rosh as an adjective can be traced to the Latin Vulgate of Jerome. 215 Third, in their articles on Rosh, many Bible dictionaries and encyclopedias (New Bible Dictionary, Wycliffe Bible Dictionary, and International Standard Bible Encyclopedia) support taking it as a proper name in Ezekiel 38. Fourth, Rosh is mentioned the first time in Ezekiel 38: 2 and then repeated in Ezekiel 38: 3 and 39: 1. If Rosh were simply a title, it would be dropped in these two places, because when titles are repeated in Hebrew, they are generally abbreviated. Fifth, the most impressive evidence in favor of taking Rosh as a proper name is simply that this translation in this context is the most natural. G. A. Cooke translates Ezekiel 38: 2, “the chief of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal.” He calls this “the most natural way of rendering the Hebrew.”…There are two key reasons for understanding Rosh in Ezekiel 38–39 as a reference to Russia. First, linguistically and historically, there is substantial evidence that in Ezekiel’s day there was a group of people known variously as Rash, Reshu, or Ros who lived in what today is southern Russia. 217 Egyptian inscriptions as early as 2600 BC identify a place called Rosh (Rash). A later Egyptian inscription from about 1500 BC refers to a land called Reshu that was located to the north of Egypt. 218 Other ancient documents include a place named Rosh or its equivalent in various languages. The word appears three times in the Septuagint (LXX), ten times in Sargon’s inscriptions, once in Ashurbanipal’s cylinder, once in Sennacherib’s annals, and five times in Ugaritic tablets. 219 While the word has a variety of forms and spellings, it is clear that the same people are in view. Rosh was apparently a well-known place in Ezekiel’s day. After providing extensive evidence of the origin and early history of the Rosh people, and then tracing them through the centuries, Clyde Billington concludes: Historical, ethnological, and archaeological evidence all favor the conclusion that the Rosh people of Ezekiel 38–39 were the ancestors of the Rus/ Ros people of Europe and Asia. . . . Those Rosh people who lived to the north of the Black Sea in ancient and medieval times were called the Rus/ Ros/ Rox/ Aorsi from very early times. . . . The Rosh people of the area north of the Black Sea formed the people known today as the Russians. 220 The great Hebrew scholar Wilhelm Gesenius, who died in 1842, noted that Rosh is “undoubtedly the Russians.” 221 Second, geographically, Ezekiel 38–39 emphasizes repeatedly that at least part of this invading force will come from the “remote parts of the north” (38: 6, 15; 39: 2, NASB). The Bible usually provides directions in reference to Israel, which, on God’s compass, is the center of the earth (Ezekiel 38: 12). If you draw a line directly north from Israel, the land that is most remote or distant to the north is Russia.” (Mark Hitchcock, The End: A Complete Overview Of Bible Prophecy And The End Of Days, 294-297 (Kindle Edition); Carol Stream, Illinois; Tyndale House Foundation)

It seems likely that “Rosh” is indeed a reference to Russia.

Meshech And Tubal

We are also told in this passage about Meshech and Tubal.

In the Bible, these two peoples are usually listed together.

For example:

Ezekiel 27:13-Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your traders. They bartered human lives and vessels of bronze for your merchandise.

Ezekiel 32:26-“There are Meshech and Tubal and all their multitudes, With all their graves around it, All of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, Though they caused their terror in the land of the living.

Some have identified these two places as ancient names for Moscow and Tobolsk, two Russian cities, because they sound similar.

However, this is not sufficient evidence to make this connection.

So then, who are they?

Notice that in the earlier reference (Ezekiel 27:13), the city of Tyre was doing business with these two countries.
It ks doubtful they were trading with russia!
So who were they?

Many believe that these cities are the same ones identified in Greek writings as Moschoi and Tibarenoi. The Assyrians referred to them as Tabal and Musku.

They are located in modern day Turkey.

Persia is one of the ancient names for the country of Iran (as is Elam).

Ethiopia, Libya

These are the same countries as today with those names.

When we study the writings of ancient extra-biblical documents, we see that the descendants of Gomer are associated with the peoples of Germany and France.

“Gomer, the first son of Japheth according to Genesis, founded a people known to the early Greeks as the Cimmerians who dwelt on the shores of the Caspian Sea. From here, they were later driven away by the Elamites. The prophet Ezekiel, during the time of the Captivity, referred to them as those who dwelt in the uppermost parts of the north. They appear in Assyrian records as the Gimirraya whose defeat under king Esarhaddon is duly noted. They appear also in the annals of the reign of Ashurbanipal of Assyria around 660 BC. The people of Ashchenaz are found in earliest times in Armenia, and later Jewish writers associate them with the Germanic races (Germanic Jews to this day are called Ashkenazim). They appear also in the 6th century BC records of Assyria as the Askuza who allied themselves with the Mannai in a revolt against Assyria, an event also mentioned in Jeremiah (51: 27) -whose prophecy incidentally confirms the identity of the Askuza with the Ashkenazim. This people were later known to the Greeks as the Scythai, the Scythians of Herodotus. They gave their name to the lake and harbour of Ascanius and to the land of Ascania.” (Bill Cooper, After The Flood: The Early Post-Flood History Of Europe Traced Back To Noah, 510-518 (Kindle Edition))

We are told in the Book of Genesis about some of the descendants of Gomer:

Genesis 10:3-The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

Interestingly enough, Josephus points out that the Greek name for the children of Ashkenaz is Rheginians.

According to ancient Roman maps, these people settled in the modern nations of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Germany.

Further, the book of Jasher indicates that there were connections between the ancestors of Gomer and the French.

Book Of Jasher 10:8-And the children of Gomer, according to their cities, were the Francum, who dwell in the land of Franza , by the river Franza, by the river Senah.

The river “Senah” mentioned by Jasher is virtually identical to the Seine River where Paris was built.

Josephus-“ For Gomer founded those whom the Greeks now call Galatians, [Galls,] but were then called Gomerites. ”. (Antiquities Of The Jews 1.6.1)

House Of Togarmah

Ken Johnson shows incredible historical evidence that the house of Togarmah included many nations, including China:

“In the chapter on Armenia we learned Togarmah had eight sons. His firstborn founded the Armenian race. This information was preserved in the History of Armenia , by Moses Chorene, and the Georgian Chronicl e s written by Leonti Mroveli in the 11th century AD. The sons of Togarmah became the progenitors of several of the Caucasian peoples . Togarmah is said to have settled among his children in Armenia and Georgia . It is also said he lived for almost 600 years. After the fall of the tower of Babel , when Nimrod lost most of his power in the outer regions, Togarmah partitioned his land among his eight sons. Hayk took what is now Armenia and part of Turkey . Kartlos and his sons settled the regions which today are collectively called the provinces of Georgia . His other sons took the land between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea up to the Caucasus Mountains . Two of Togarmah’s sons, Kovkas and Kekan (founder of the Leks), settled north of the Caucasus Mountains . The Georgian Chronicle s tell us the second born son of Togarmah, Kartlos , founded the Georgian race. Kartlos had five sons: Mc ’ xet ’a, Gardbos , Ka x os , K uxos, and Gajis . Mc ’ xet ’a had three sons: Op’los, Ojrx os , and Jawaxos . These seven sons and grandsons of Kartlos became the founders and first kings of the Mtskheta, Gardabani, Kakheti, Kukheti, Gachiani, Uplistsikhe, Odzrkhe, and Javakheti peoples , respectively. Kartlos united his people and founded the city of Kartli. Today Kartli is the name of the largest province of Eastern Georgia . The Georgian capital, Tbilisi , and the cities Gori and Rustavi are located there. Azerbaijan and Armenia are directly south of it….Part of the house of Togarmah, known as Kipchaks, spread throughout, and intermingled with, the peoples of southern Russia as far as China and as far west as Bulgaria, and the Ukraine. A zerbaijan should be a part of the house of Togarmah ; but they have no record that they are.” (Ken Johnson, Th.D., Ancient Post-Flood History: Historical Evidences That Point To Biblical Creation, 2691-2796 (Kindle Edition)).

The Hesitant Nations

We are also told about some nations that do not actually help Israel.

Furthermore, they seem to simply offer a complaint and an objection against the hateful nations for attacking Israel; yet they do not take any definitive action.

Let’s notice these “hesitant nations.”

Sheba And Dan

Today, these are the scattered peoples of Saudi Arabia.

Tarshish And Her Merchants And Lions

Many people believe that this could be a reference to the United States.

Tarshish itself was a city located in Spain, which was far to the west from Israel.

Hitchcock explains:

“The specific nations that question Gogs actions are identified as “Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish.” Sheba and Dedan are not difficult to identify. These are the ancient names for the land we know today as Saudi Arabia. Tarshish, on the other hand, is not so simple to identify. But the majority of scholars believe that Tarshish is ancient Tartessus in the present-day nation of Spain. Both Brown-Driver-Briggs and the Hebrew scholar Gesenius support this view. Tarshish was a wealthy, flourishing colony of the Phoenicians. It exported silver, iron, tin, and lead (see Jeremiah 10: 9; Ezekiel 27: 12, 25)….Where was Tarshish in Ezekiel’s day? It was at the extreme west of the known world, in Spain. When God commanded Jonah to go preach to Nineveh (about five hundred miles northeast of Israel), Jonah headed to Tarshish instead—about as far in the other direction as he could go (see Jonah 1: 1-3). Tarshish is associated in Scripture with the West: “The western kings of Tarshish and the islands will bring him tribute” (Psalm 72: 10, NLT)….The young lions of Tarshish could be a reference to the colonies that emerged from Europe—including the United States. If this is true, then the young lions of Tarshish could be the United States in the last days. If so, she will join with her European and Saudi allies to lodge a formal protest against the Russian-Islamic aggressors.” (Mark Hitchcock, Is America In Bible Prophecy, (395-404 (Kindle Edition); Multinomah Books)

The study of archaeology has shed further light on this issue by demonstrating that Tarshish was part of the ancient Phoenician Empire, which led expeditions to the New World long before the time of Christopher Columbus:

“That ancient Old World Semitic civilizations built a large temple observatory complex in ancient America indicates that they were colonizing, not merely exploring, ancient America. Radiocarbon dating tests showing this facility was in use during the 2nd millennium B.C. confirms that this Semitic colony was present in North America at the time King David was importing prodigious amounts of copper ore for the building of God’s Temple. The presence of a large Semitic settlement in North America during King David’s reign confirms the likelihood that King David’s Israel (with its huge copper smelting facility at Ezion-geber) was the consignee for the many millions of pounds of copper ores which “vanished” from the ancient Lake Superior copper mines. The ships of Tarshish (referred to in Ezekiel 27: 25 and Jonah 1: 3) were also regular callers in the New World, and inscriptions and tablets of their involvement in colonizing ancient America was preserved in Rhode Island, Ohio, and West Virginia. 21…Fell notes that the Tartessian inscriptions in ancient America are a “dialectal variant of Phoenician,” 22 confirming that these early American visitors were also Semites from the Mediterranean area.” (Steven M. Collins, The ‘Lost” Ten Tribes Of Israel…Found!, 1012-1021 (Kindle Edition); Boring, Oregon; CPA Books)

Therefore, some believe that these “hesitant” nations primarily refer to Saudi Arabia, American, Spain, and England.

The Hated Nation

The Bible here tells us about the nation that is so hated is Israel.

However, this poses a bit of a dilemma.
Throughout the Bible, the word “Israel” can have reference to two different “groups.”

I refer to them as Physical Israel (the physical descendants of Abraham) and Spiritual Israel (the spiritual descendants of Abraham).

Romans 9:6-7-6 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, 7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “IN ISAAC YOUR SEED SHALL BE CALLED.”

The Bible talks about two “different” Israels:

1 Corinthians 10:18-Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

Galatians 6:16-And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.

God had declared in the Old Testament that the people of Israel would be His people IF and only IF they obeyed the Lord’s Word:

Exodus 19:3-6-3 And Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”

One author points out several examples of these “two Israels” as found throughout the Bible:

“According to Paul, there are two Israels. The proof? The Jewish apostle wrote, “They are not all Israel who are of Israel” (Romans 9:6). In this chapter, we will discover that there is an “Israel after the flesh” (1 Corinthians 10:18) and an “Israel of God” (Galatians 6:16), composed of both Jews and Gentiles who have personal faith in Jesus Christ, God’s true Messiah. Paul wrote, “Just as Abraham ‘believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.’ Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham” (Galatians 3:6-7). Paul’s argument is that because Abraham was a man of faith, only those who have faith are his spiritual children. We might call this the concept of “faith lineage.” This truth is like a key that can open a lock in our heads. Once the lock is open we can understand the shocking principle of two Israels. John the Baptist understood and boldly preached “faith lineage.” When a group of tricky Pharisees and Sadducees came to question John’s right to baptize, the wilderness prophet astonished them by shouting, “And do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” (Matthew 3:9-10). Those Pharisees and Sadducees didn’t have real faith like Abraham did, yet they claimed to be his children. John the Baptist exposed this delusion. “Don’t think that!” he thundered. John then laid the “ax” to the root of the trees by saying that if they didn’t bear “good fruit” through faith in God like Abraham did, they would be “cut down and thrown into the fire” (verse 10). Clearly natural lineage alone is not enough. Without faith and a spiritual connection with the Almighty, those Jews were doomed. Jesus Christ taught the same truth. A certain group of Jewish people once said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus responded, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham” (John 8:39). They also claimed to be Abraham’s children, but they lacked true faith. By saying, “If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus denied their claim. Christ continued, “But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. You do the deeds of your father” (John 8:40-41). “We have one Father—God,” they countered. “Jesus said to them, ‘If God were your Father, you would love Me…You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it’” (John 8:41-42,44). What an atomic text! Jesus was talking to some Jewish people who claimed to be Israelites, the children of Abraham, yet they were only following God outwardly, not in heart. Jesus said they weren’t really Abraham’s children at all because they lacked true faith and were following lies. Their lineage actually went back to satan, the first liar….Jesus Christ also taught “faith lineage” in John chapter 1. A spiritually-minded Jew named Nathanael was wondering whether Jesus of Nazareth was really his Messiah. Retiring to a favorite spot under a fig tree, he prayed about the matter. Soon a friend introduced him to the Savior. When Jesus saw Nathanael, He joyfully declared, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” (John 1:47) Nathanael had a natural lineage that went back to Abraham. Yet he had more. In his spiritual life, he had gained victories over guile, which means deception. When Jesus discerned Nathanael’s spiritual lineage to Abraham and Jacob, He called him “an Israelite indeed.” Just as Jacob himself had become a spiritual Israel, even so had Nathanael become “an Israelite indeed.” He was part of God’s true spiritual Israel. Just as there are two Israels, even so are there two kinds of Jews. There are Jewish people in the flesh and Jewish people in the Spirit. In words of warning to certain Jews who were breaking the Ten Commandments, Paul wrote, “Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God…. For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. Therefore, if an uncircumcised man [a Gentile] keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?…For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God” (Romans 2:17,25-26,28-29). Did you catch that? Someone who is “called a Jew” because he is a physical descendant of Abraham, and yet who lives as a lawbreaker, is “not a Jew.” His “circumcision has become uncircumcision.” To God, he is a Gentile. And the believing Gentile, who through faith keeps “the righteous requirements of the law,” his uncircumcision is “counted as circumcision.” To God, he is a Jew. Thus John the Baptist, Jesus Christ, and Paul all agree—natural lineage is not enough. Whether or not someone is “an Israelite indeed” depends upon one’s faith and spiritual character. Paul summarized, “For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3). Anyone today can become one of these “Jews,” no matter who their earthly parents are. These concepts of “faith lineage,” Jews being counted as Gentiles, and visa versa, lead us to one of the biggest issues facing the prophecy-minded Christian world. This issue is at the core of prophetic interpretation. In it, we are faced with two options. One is the truth, the other a lie. One leads to Heaven and the other, possibly, to hell….Paul deals with this explosive issue in Romans 9:2-8. His words require careful thought. Sorrowfully, Paul wrote about his Jewish “countrymen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises” (verses 2-4). God did make promises to Israel in the Old Testament. Yet what if some Jews do not have true faith in Him? Can God fulfill His promises to an unbelieving Israel after the flesh? If not, has His Word failed? Paul’s answer to these important questions is vital: “Not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel” (verse 6). Notice that the truth of two Israels is Paul’s assurance that God’s Word will not fail. Look carefully: “They are not all Israel [the Israel of God] who are of Israel [of the Jewish nation].” Thus a Jew can be of the Jewish nation, and yet not be part of the Israel of God. Now here’s the explosive question: To which Israel will God fulfill His promises? Paul continues, “Nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, ‘In Isaac your seed shall be called’” (verse 7). Since not all physical descendants of Abraham are automatically God’s true children, therefore His promises are for those “in Isaac.” Abraham had two sons. The first was Ishmael, who was born after the flesh. The second was Isaac, who was born when Abraham had faith in God’s promise (see Genesis 16:1-3,15; 21:1-3; Romans 4:18-21). In Galatians 4:22-31, Paul shockingly reveals that Ishmael represents unbelieving Jews, while Isaac represents Jews and Gentiles who have faith in Christ! “Now we, brethren [as believers in Christ], as Isaac was, are children of promise” (Galatians 4:28). The “children of promise” are those who “receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3:14). Therefore, the Israel that is “in Isaac” is the Israel of God in the Holy Spirit. Paul concludes, “That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed” (Romans 9:8, emphasis added). “Counted as the seed” means that, although some may be Gentiles, they’re in. Here is an eight-point summary of Paul’s rather detailed reasoning: God made promises to Abraham and his seed (Galatians 3:16). Abraham’s seed would continue “in Isaac” (Romans 9:7). Isaac was born when Abraham had faith in God’s promise (Romans 4:19-21). Isaac represents everyone who believes in Jesus and who receives the promise of the Holy Spirit by faith (Galatians 3:14; 4:22-28) All who have faith in Jesus Christ—Jews or Gentiles—“are counted as the seed” (Galatians 3:14; Romans 9:8; 10:12). This seed is “the Israel of God” in Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:16,29; 6:14-16). God will fulfill His promises to this Israel (Galatians 3:29; 4:28; 6:14-16). Thus God’s promises to Israel have not been made of “no effect,” even though some Jewish people don’t believe in their own Messiah (Romans 9:6-8). Here we have the answer to the issue that means so much in prophetic interpretation. The Bible is clear. God will fulfill His Old Testament promises to those “in Isaac,” that is, to any human being who follows Abraham’s example and who becomes part of His Israel in the Spirit through faith in the Messiah. Thus the issue is not race, bloodline, genealogy, or ethnicity, but personal faith—a faith available to all (see Romans 10:12). Those who are only “the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed” (Romans 9:8). We should not expect God to fulfill His promises to unbelieving Israelites of the flesh (or to lips-only Christians of the flesh for that matter), unless, of course, they individually become true believers in the Messiah….In the next three verses, Paul refers to Israel’s apostasy in the days of Elijah. God told His prophet, “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal” (verse 4). In Elijah’s time there were also two Israels. One followed Baal, the other followed God. Then Paul made this pointed application. “Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace” (verse 5). Just as in Elijah’s time there was a faithful remnant of Israel, even so in Paul’s time there was also a faithful remnant of believing Jews, who, like himself, had been saved by grace. Based on the context of Romans 11:1-5, it is this faithful remnant of Israel, made up of Jews like Paul, which God has certainly not “cast away.” Soon we will see this exact issue in the Book of Revelation. As in the days of Elijah, we are now in the midst of a terrible apostasy. Yet today God has His “seven thousand” who have not “bowed the knee to Baal.” They are His faithful remnant, His Israel in the Holy Spirit, who rely on God’s power instead of their flesh. Like Elijah, they will be on the side of Jesus Christ and His truth at Armageddon.” (Steve Wohlberg, End-Time Delusions: The Rapture, The Antichrist, Israel, And The End Of The World, 153-157 (Kindle Edition); Shippensburg, PA; Treasure House)

Since the word “Israel” can have reference to either the physical or the spiritual descendants of Abraham, which are we talking about here in Ezekiel 38-39?

In other words, is the “Israel” in this passage talking about the Jewish people, or about the church of Christ?

First, the text tells us that the “Israel” in this passage were in subjection to the Messiah (Ezekiel 34:11-31; 37:24).

Second, this “Israel” had the Holy Spirit of God (Ezekiel 36:27).

Third, this “Israel” had repented of sin and been forgiven by the Lord (Ezekiel 36:32-33; 37:23).

Fourth, this “Israel” lived under the New Testament (Ezekiel 16:60-62; 20:37; 34:25; 37:26).

Fifth, this “Israel” would be in existence during the Christian Age or the “latter years” and “latter days” (Ezekiel 38:8, 16).

The “Israel after the flesh” that God brought back from Babylonian captivity (Ezekiel 37) was given the opportunity to become the true “Israel of God” based upon whether or not they accepted Jesus Christ.

The “Israel” in these chapters has reference to those Hebrews who became the people of God when they were forgiven and saved and added to God’s church:

Romans 2:28-29-28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.

Galatians 3:7-Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.

Galatians 3:26-29-26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

In our next article, we will try and put all of these facts together.

We will see what these chapters in Ezekiel teach us about God, His people, and their enemies.

For now, in conclusion, notice three things with me.

First, when we carefully analyze this list of nations, something remarkable stands out: all of the nations (both the hateful nations and the hesitant nations) surround “Israel.”

In other words, the people of God are here completely surrounded by enemies.

Second, to be part of “Israel” today, we must be added by God to His church when we surrender to the Lord according to His plan of redemption.

Finally, we see here the promise that God would bring forth the Good Shepherd Who would come and heal the people:

Ezekiel 34:11-12-11 ‘For thus says the Lord GOD: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day.

The Good Shepherd (Jesus-John 1-:1-30) did come, to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). He came and died for the sins of mankind on the cross of Calvary, was buried, and arose from the dead on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

He invites all believers everywhere to come to Him and be saved (Matthew 11:28-30).

Believers are told:

Acts 2:38-Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Christians who sin are exhorted to come back to the Lord:

1 John 1:9-If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

The Magog War: Part One-The Time Of The War

By: Mark Tabata (Evangelist)

In the Book of Ezekiel, there is a fascinating prophecy found which describes a coalition of nations which launch an all-out assault upon “Israel” during the “latter years.” This list of nations has a determination to defeat God’s people; and yet when the Lord Himself intervenes, they are stopped and destroyed.

Who are the countries in this alliance?
When are the “latter years” that the Prophet describes?

How much of this passage is literal, and how much is figurative?

What lessons can we learn from the Magog War?

In this series of articles, we will carefully turn our attention to the Word of God to find answers to these (and other) questions.

In this first article, we will notice what the Bible teaches us regarding WHEN the Magog war will take place.

Let’s study.

The Context Of The Prophet Ezekiel
The Prophet Ezekiel was taken captive from the land of Israel in 597 B.C. The mighty nation of Babylon, in keeping with its’ practice of massive deportations learned from the preceding powerful Assyrian Empire, relocated many of their Jewish’ enemies to its’ homeland, where they could be policed and enslaved (Ezekiel 1:1-3).

It was here, among these captive Jews, that the Lord commissioned Ezekiel to preach His Word.

In the year 586 B.C., king Nebuchadnezzar would return to Jerusalem and destroy the temple of God. Using this event, we see that Ezekiel’s prophecies were divided up into the following pattern:

The Prophecies Which Were Made Before The Destruction Of The Temple (1-24)

The Prophecies Which Were Made Destruction The Destruction Of The Temple (25-32)

The Prophecies Which Were Made After The Destruction Of The Temple (33-48)

With these facts firmly in place, we will turn our attention to the question: When will this war take place?

First: The Magog War Will Take Place After The Jews Return To Their Land

God had declared through Jeremiah the Prophet that the people would be in captivity for seventy years in Babylon:&nbsp

Jeremiah 29:10-For thus says the LORD: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place.

Ezekiel 28:25-Thus says the Lord GOD: “When I have gathered the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and am hallowed in them in the sight of the Gentiles, then they will dwell in their own land which I gave to My servant Jacob.

Ezekiel 34:13-And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land; I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the valleys and in all the inhabited places of the country.

Ezekiel 36:24-For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.

This was fulfilled in the years 536, 457, and 444 B.C when Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah led the Jews back from Babylonian captivity.

Second: The Magog War Will Happen After The Messiah Has Come And Is Reigning

Ezekiel 34:11-31-The Bible here talks about the Lord being the Good Shepherd Who goes and finds the lost sheep. Jesus applies this title to Himself in John 10:1-30.

Ezekiel 37:24-“David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd; they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them.

What does it mean that David will rule over them?

The ancient Jews understood that the Messiah would be a descendant of king David.

Several Scriptures document this, and the Jewish sages long before the time of Christ. The famous scholar, John Kill, made the following comment on this passage:

“The King Messiah, as Kimchi interprets it; and so Abarbinel (i) and others; being of the seed of David, and of whom David was an eminent type; and who, as Mediator, is the Lord’s servant, and as man appeared in the form of one: this shows that this prophecy looks further than the times of deliverance from the Babylonish captivity…”. (John Gill)

Thus, “David” was a reference to the Messiah.

Jesus came and He is now reigning (Matthew 28:18; Revelation 1:4-5).

Third: The Magog War Will Happen After The Establishment Of The New Testament

Several times throughout the OldTestament, we are told about the fact that God was going to make a New Covenant with His people. This Covenant would be different from the Old Testament (Jeremiah 31:31-34).

Ezekiel talks a great deal about this New Covenant, and we see that it would be established before the events of chapters 38 and 39.

Ezekiel 16:60-62-60 “Nevertheless I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you. 61 Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed, when you receive your older and your younger sisters; for I will give them to you for daughters, but not because of My covenant with you. 62 And I will establish My covenant with you. Then you shall know that I am the LORD,

Ezekiel 20:37-I will make you pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant;

Ezekiel 34:25-“I will make a covenant of peace with them, and cause wild beasts to cease from the land; and they will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods.

Ezekiel 37:26-Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; I will establish them and multiply them, and I will set My sanctuary in their midst forevermore.

The New Covenant was established when Jesus died on the cross of Calvary:

Matthew 26:28-For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

This New Covenant is better then the Old in many ways:

Hebrews 7:22-by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.

Hebrews 8:6-But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

Fourth: The Magog War Will Happen After The People Repent And Are Forgiven By The Lord

Ezekiel tells us that the war of Magog would take place when the people of Israel repented of their sins.

Ezekiel 36:32-33-32 Not for your sake do I do this,” says the Lord GOD, “let it be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel!” 33 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be rebuilt.

Ezekiel 37:23-They shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions; but I will deliver them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them.

Then they shall be My people, and I will be their God.

Furthermore, we are told these Jews who repented would be from all the nations of the world:

Ezekiel 36:24-For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.

Notice the beginning of the fulfillment of this:

Acts 2:5-And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

Acts 2:41-Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

Fifth: The Magog War Will Happen After The Holy Spirit Has Been Given To The People Of God

We are told about the fact that the Holy Spirit would be given to the people of Israel before the war of Magog.

Ezekiel 36:27-I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
Jesus prophesied about the giving of the Holy Spirit:

John 7:38-39-38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

The Spirit was given on the Day of Pentecost:

Acts 2:38-Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Sixth: The Magog War Would Take Place In The “Latter Years” And The “Latter Days”

We are assured that the Magog War will take place in what Ezekiel calls the “latter years” and the “latter days.”

Ezekiel 38:8-After many days you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely.

Ezekiel 38:16-You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me, when I am hallowed in you, O Gog, before their eyes.”

The phrase “the latter years” is only used here in the Bible (Ezekiel 38:8).

However, the phrase “after days” (also “last days”) is used all throughout the Bible.

It often has reference to the Christian Age (which began at Pentecost and which will continue down through the Second Coming).

Notice that in Acts 2, Peter takes the prophecy of Joel of the “latter days” and points out that it was beginning to be fulfilled in the first century:

The Apostle Paul also writes about the last days:

Hebrews 1:1-2-1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

Seventh: The Magog War Would Occur When Iran Is At Peace With Russia

In the next article in this series, I will go into more detail about the identification of the nations here described. For now, I will simply point out that “Rosh” (Ezekiel 38:2) is most likely a reference to Russia, and Persia is a reference to Iran.

We are told:

Ezekiel 38:5-Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet;

Now, here is why that is significant: the Russians and Iranians have never had an alliance until the last few years!

Eighth: The Magog War Would Occur When “Israel” Was In Peace And Secure In Her Land

The final clue to notice about when the war of Magog will happen when the people of Israel are secure in their land.

We read:

Ezekiel 38:11-You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of unwalled villages; I will go to a peaceful people, who dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates’—

In our next article, we will talk more about the identity of “Israel” here.

However, i want to share this fact with you: if “Israel” here has reference to the literal Jewish people (i.e., the physical descendants of Abraham), then this prophecy would seem to still be in the future.

One author has written:

“Some argue that Israel is at rest and living securely today, and they believe this prophecy could be fulfilled at any time. They maintain that Israel is living in great prosperity and is enjoying security. While that is true to some degree, no matter how hard one might try to stretch the meaning of these words, Israel is not really at rest today. Today an armed truce and a no-man’s-land separate Israel from their enemies. At the time of this writing, Israel is an armed camp, living under a tenuous truce with only two of their Arab neighbors—Egypt and Jordan—and both of those agreements could be jeopardized at any time by current events in the Middle East. Their other neighbors would love nothing more than to drive every Israelite into the Mediterranean Sea and kill all of them. The reason that they do not is that, humanly speaking, Israel has a good army that is more than a match for its neighbors. Every young Israeli man is required to have three years of military training and every young woman, two years of military training. While the women are trained for jobs that are not necessarily combatant, they also learn to use weapons, so that if they need to fight, they can. After military training, many of them are settled in villages near the border, where they can serve a double purpose—following their civilian job, whatever it is, and serving as guards for the border of Israel. If the nations of Ezekiel 38–39 should invade the Middle East today, it would not fulfill this prophecy because Israel is not at rest. Israel’s current state of unrest does not correspond to Ezekiel’s prophecy.” (Mark Hitchcock, The End: A Complete Overview Of Bible Prophecy And The End Of Days, 304 (Kindle Edition); Carol Stream, Illinois; Tyndale House Foundation)

The Magog War will occur:

After The Jews Were Returned To Their Land (Fulfilled)

After The Messiah Has Come And Is Reigning (Fulfilled)

After The New Testament Has Been Established (Fulfilled)

After The People Had Repented And Would Be Forgiven (Fulfilled)

After The Holy Spirit Had Been Given (Fulfilled)

After The Time Of The Latter Days Had Begun (Fulfilled)

After The Nations Of Russia And Iran Have Made Peace (Fulfilled)

After The People Of Israel Are Living Peacefully And Securely In Their Land (Unfulfilled)

Let me also make some other observations for you to consider.

First, these subjects show us very clearly that God knows the future. He is God! He is all-knowing (1 John 3:20).

Since we are so limited in our understanding, wouldn’t it be wise to turn to Him and allow Him to lead us?

Knowing that God knows the future, shouldn’t we be making plans to get right with Him for whenever we do meet Him?

Second, these examples of prophecy and fulfillment from Ezekiel demonstrate again the supernatural origin of the Bible.
Friends, the Bible IS the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17)! It is the complete and final revelation of God to mankind, and it is what is needed to direct us (1 Corinthians 14:37; Jude 3; 1 Timothy 3:14-15).

Recently, I was having a brief Bible discussion with a gentleman who wanted to know why we in the churches of Christ do not use instrumental music in our worship services to God.

As we talked, he asked the question, “Well, who decides what we can and can’t do in worship?”

My response was simple: “The Bible.”

I don’t believe that sat well with him, just like it doesn’t set well with a lot of people. Yet the simple truth is: the Bible is the Word of God! Why call Jesus Lord if we are not going to do what He says to do (Luke 6:46)?

We need to surrender ourselves to His Word and allow Him to lead us.

Third, this study has demonstrated very clearly that when we are God’s people, we are going to have enemies.

Not long ago, I was having a Bible study with a young man who asked why so many people do not like Christians. I told him that one reason (not the only one) is because people want to live in darkness and they do not like the Light.

So, when they see and hear people who stand for the Word of Jesus (the Light of the World), they will often hate and persecute His light-bringers.

Isn’t that what Jesus taught?

John 3:19-And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

John 15:20-21-20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.

Being a Christian will mean that we will have enemies. Yes, we strive to love them and pray for them and do good to them (Matthew 5:44-45), but make no mistake about it: people will often hate us for standing up for the Word of God.

Yes, they will attack us.

Yes, they will stand against us.

Yet in the end, we are going to be victorious!

Friends, Jesus Christ died for your sins on the Cross of Calvary because of the great love of God for mankind (1 Timothy 2:6). He wants you to be saved from Hell and to be with Him for eternity in Heaven (1 Timothy 2:4).

For you, He died, was buried, and arose again on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

He calls believers to repent and be baptized by the authority of Christ for the remission of their sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).

Why not obey Him today?

If you are an erring child of God, will you not today repent of your sin and confess it to the Lord in prayer as you return to Him and His church (1 John 1:8-2:2)?

Even now He is knocking and inviting you back to Him (Revelation 3:20).

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
